Default Removable bottom uds

Sorry if this has been covered but there are a ton of threads on the uds and it's hard to search them all. I made my 1st uds and love it, so dose my sister. In fact she has asked me to build her one. I was looking at the barrel I have and it has a removable lid. I was thinking of making the lid the bottom and cutting a hole in the other end. It would make it easier to clean and the weber lid fits very nice on the other end. I'm sure some one else has done this and may be able to give so some direction. I am worried about an air leak at the bottom and that it may not be as strong. Who has done this and dose it work out in the long run.

Thats how I do all mine, not a problem at all with air leaks. I use the locking rings to keep it on nice and tight, then put a 1/8" x 1 1/2" bar stock around the top to help hold the lit in place. Works fantastic. I have 2 built that and use them ever weekend year round, so no worriers on durability.

I have seen others do the same, and it seems to work. Once you get some ash and seasoning in there, it will seal up fine. Just start with a reasonably close fitting lid

Just get a drum that doesn't have a removable lid. Or instead of cutting get a piece of metal transition trim(used in flooring) and use it to make a band around the top for the lid to rest on, it also has holes in the trim so one less thing to worry about. Then get some oven gasket stuff and throw a seal around it.
