Default Sealing Materials

I would like to seal off my pit door a little better. Where can I buy seal material, and how do you install it?

I recomend applying fireplace gasket material. A fireplace and stove store should carry it. Don't bother with Home Depot.. They will look at you like your "high!"

You can clean with acetone. Take high temp silicone and put bead on door. Put waxpaper or coat with vaseline on cooker. Let silicone set for a while and then close lid. Leave for a day or so. Lift lid and clean vasoline off. Self forming gasket.

They would look at me that way everywhere I go on Guam asking for fireplace supplies.

This sounds the best so far, not sure if they sell it here but I will check. Any other ideas from the experts?

They sell it in smaller tubes in autoparts stores.

Default Old oven 'cord'

With my apologies to Kickback for jumping his thread, but I was going to use some old "oven cord", pulled off of a couple of recycled ovens, attached with the Hi-temp silicone (see pics)... Is this overkill or a good idea?

This is going to be a 'cold' smoker, don't plan on having temps exceed 200.

Obvious questions - is the silicone sealant 'food safe' - ?

I use wood stove gasket material, attached with JB Weld. It has NEVER come off. Tried every other kind of stickum, the seal always came loose.

Now as far as food safe, other than the fact that I now seem to have a strange urge to kill my entire neighborhood, I have not noticed any changes in me since using the JB Weld.
