I printed out the contest that I was entering, let them know what our team name was and that I would put there name on our banner. I went to our local butcher and he said he would supply me with the meat I needed and has too. The other was our local home and garden center and they give me free lump charcoal. I also made them team t-shirts because of there generosity.

The number one thing a sponsor should recieve is results. They need to see increased exposure to their target market through a relationship with you.

It helps if you have a winning track record to show them. The more you cook and the more you will win, the more attention you will gain - and exposure for your team will follow, meaning product retention from consumers for the product you represent. It's not an overnight process.

Now if you are looking for a "one off" like getting free meat or beer for a single local contest, a few slabs of ribs or your contest left overs might work. But these are really two different things.

I think you will find the majority of teams competing who have established consistant yearly sponsorhips, really only recieve a product or two like rub, sauce, cooker fuel (pellets/charcoal). They probably still pay the majority of their competition costs out of their own pockets.

I got lucky. I have a good relationship with my local BGE dealer. We're the only team that cooks on Eggs. The public is curious about the cookers and we know them inside and out and answer alot of questions. I got a 3x5 banner to hang up behind us and business cards to hand out if I'm not busy. In return, he pays enrty and meat costs for local comps, about 8 this year. Hopefully he will be satisfied and will extend it next year also.

Just ask. Write up a nice sponsor letter and drop it by some day. If they so no, your now worse off, if they say yes. Great!.

Offer to them to come out to bbq feed on Friday nigth at one of your contests. Then you can show them what your doing and they can really see how competition bbq really is.

Also, don't ask for a bunch of money. Start low, like in the hundreds low, and work up from there. After all, it's your hobby not theirs.

Check out my website on how I have included the sponsors so far.

I just got my first one, Great River Brewing Company (Formerly Old Capitol Brew Works). This worked out well because the brewer is a good friend and is looking to market his new brewery label. We are still working out the details, but we are looking to make out like bandits because he is offering us limitless free beer during comps. This should save us at least one thousand dollars per competition!

I know you will be bringing me a beer at contest this year....Right?
Infact, there are 3 of us, so bring 3. We would love to try it.

My hope is that he'll provide it by the keg, so we have it there for any team that comes over to our site with a cup, or wants to do a keg stand.
