The Redhead and I were in Honolulu a few years ago and saw a lunch special for Hawaiian burgers so we went in for lunch. I asked the waitress what made it a Hawaiian burger and she said it is just a hamburger with pineapple on it. :D It was good, but I was a little disappointed.

A bar and grill near me has one made with a grilled pineapple ring, some bbq sauce, onions straws and mayo. The mayo and bbq sauce sounds weird, I know, but trust me on this one, it's a pretty tasty burger assembly. The BBQ sauce they use is Cattlemans.

Growing up was around transplanted Hawaiians all the time, never heard of such a thing. I can tell you though, all the food was a mix of American, American military, Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese food, all rolled into one. We used to make a burger meat combo that was ground chuck, ground pork, chopped onions, chopped water chestnuts, mirin (sweet sake), beer, soy sauce and sesame oil (just a little). Mix it up and grill it, glaze with teriyaki sauce and serve with slices of Maui onions and Japanese style pickled cabbage.

On the Mainland throwing pineapple on something makes it Hawaiian. My understanding is the Hawaiians don't use pineapple as much as we think they do.

The Hawaiians I grew up with rarely ate pineapple, and when they did, it was fresh and eaten as a fruit after dinner or while picnicking. It was a treat.

Oh, yeah, those King's Sweet Bread buns are terrific. We used to get the large loaves and make french toast out of them. Man that brings back memories.

Sure thing!
Use Kings Hawaiin Sweet bread for the buns, and add a crust of ground macadamian nuts to the burger.

If you want to go crazy - add avocado to the burger as a topping,

we already had this discussion about hawaii and pineapple. as stated, it was rarely eaten in hawaii. i lived there for a while and never really saw it except where it was grown. in hawaii, hamburgers were just hamburgers.
