Rust on BBQ grates

So I am buying a Big A$$ Barrel Smoker (not sure of the acronym, but BABS I dub thee). It is huge......

The grates are rusty, and I am not sure that serving rust is a smart thing to do....here is my plan..clean the grates really well and then grease them down really good....can they be painted or coated with anything?

I wouldn't paint them. Clean and oil them.

just keep them clean and oiled. i use either copper or ss wool to clean grates. a little rust is not a problem.

Wire brush the grates off load the pit with Butts wen the butts come off kick the pit to 350 for an hr before shutting down never clean them after that.

Peanut oil is an excellent cast iron seasoner, provided you're not allergic. It's what is generally used for seasoning woks for high temp cooking.

Find an old pair of gloves and a pound of cheap bacon. Wipe the interior down and build a hot fire. Wipe with a clean rag if so inclined when complete.

All good advice ^^^^ . I like to use a paint brush to put the peanut on with.
