As for the KCUR report, after reading it I was less than impressed. Without getting into rumors, or opinions, I'd have expected something more balanced considering one of the reporters has a law degree. From what I can tell they looked at one 990. They looked at none of the minutes (maybe the NPR budget didn't support a membership?), and I'm speculating contacted only people that had contact info provided.

The criticism is directed at the journalism, and not the individuals or organization. I'd be shocked if that was the only package mailed out, but to my knowledge it's the only 'news' outlet that has run anything up to this point. Maybe others are doing their due diligence and will in the future.

I don't know who sent it, and don't assume that anyone named did. It could have been anyone with an axe to grind, and that's my take away. I don't think it served anyone well.

I got one as well. If an assclown such as myself received a packet, anyone could have ...

I didn't see this posted yet, but KCBS responded to the KCUR article...

https://mms.kcbs.us/news_archive_hea...=KCBA#21426227

Quote:
The Kansas City Barbeque Society is disappointed to learn that a local publication recently published an article that has given a group of disgruntled former officers, directors and vendors a media platform to spread misinformation. Packages with these untrue statements and confidential matters were mailed to various sources on behalf of “anonymous” parties. These packages were falsely made to look like they were sent from the KCBS headquarters, though staff confirm they were not sent from the office...

The KCBS banquet revealed the election results for the board. Five were added (in no particular order) they were Myron Berry, Chiles Cridlin, David Mcallister, Nancy Goldsmith and Rick Wagner.

February Quick Notes released yesterday. It looks like there were a couple big moves noted. I assume more detail will be in the full minutes, but looks like a single meat contest as part of a fully sanctioned contest got approved - Ribs as a pilot. This will count for category TOY points. I think this is a great move to get some excitement as part of fully sanctioned events. Hopefully, KCBS puts this out there as a spectator event. I think Brad mentioned this in his Tailgate Guys Podcast show recently.
Second, the team fee to organizers is being moved up. While I know many feel that the cost to compete is too much, this fee doesn't bother me, assuming it is going to come back to benefit the membership. I think our TOY awards should be self funded at a minimum and if we land additional sponsorship, then it is an added benefit. This will help eliminate year-end confusion and allow the board to lay out exactly what everyone is chasing.
The last thing that seemed big is the change in terminology for TOY. I wonder if the Overall is going away and having US TOY and International TOY. I'm not sure yet what I think about that.
For the most part, this board looks like they mean business in getting things done and moving forward for KCBS. This is exactly what they were voted to do. I'm looking forward to more to come.

So, does this mean that at a sanctioned 4-meat competition, a single (KCBS sanctioned) meat contest could be held independently of the 4-meat competition? And I'm guessing the 4-meat competitors could also enter the 1-meat competition alongside a group of 1-meat competitors?

They passed it as a companion only in conjunction with a 4 meat contest for the trial period. My hope is that they will allow single meat stand alone events in the near future. They are not meant to run concurrently. At my event (the pilot), rib only turn in is Saturday night, KCBS 4 meat is Sunday.

This should significantly lower the barrier to entry for both competitors and organizers. My event will have a $135 entry fee and an $8,000-$10,000 prize purse... for one category. Grab $60 of ribs, toss a table and a drum in the back of the pickup, turn-in a rib box, grab your money and go home. Hell, toss in 2 cookers and carpool with your friend. Your investment as a cook is next to nothing and you’re competing at the highest level. An organizer doesn’t need to worry about acres of space, generators, tent cities, etc... it’s a win win that will fuel a growth spurt.

The only thing I asked is that they change the organization’s name to “BBS” or “Brad’s BBQ Society”. I didn’t see how that vote turned out. I’m sure it passed in closed session.

I love this idea. Hope it comes to the Mid Atlantic.

Hopefully some of these make it up to Minnesota. We hardly have any contest left up here and the shift seems to be to having more and more backyard contests. Problem is they won't left guys like me enter them since I have more that 12 contests under my belt, but I am by no means a pro since I do 2-4 contest a year. Also being such a part time cook, I'm not going to drive 5+ hours for a contest.

I am liking the idea. Granted I do have some concerns regarding the team of the year points part and how that will work but hey it’s a pilot program. There’s plenty of time to get that stuff all ironed out. I think this could be really good. I am signed up for Brad‘s contest and will be cooking the standalone rib cook off also. I think it’s really cool to be part of the pilot program. I already have some ideas bouncing around in my head about how I’m going to approach it.
