How do clean out the coals? Just take off the lid, the grill, and the basket and dump?

I'm looking for a suitable ash pan to place under the coal basket. But right now I plan to just use the shop vac.

OK. That's more than two questions.
Nice job!
Fired her up this morning at 7:00 am and as of right now, 8:22 pm, still going strong at 250 degrees

Well, through my smoker anyway...last I saw
she was sitting in the junkyard...not sure
what year it was...old ramcharger I think..
I've had the ornament for a decade at least..
I thought about putting it on my truck but
my smoker needs it more!!!

That is what I thought I saw. Thanks for the GOOD idea. I'm thinking of tacking the V shaped rod to some 1/8 X 3/4 flat stock (or some 16 ga even) and drilling the mating holes for my handle.. I'm scrounging in my garage as we speak.

I didn't want to get too many holes going until I get settled the final mod on my handle.

2" pipe for exhaust threaded into bung hole..
1" pipe for air intakes...I used a 1.25" hole saw for drilling
3 evenly spaced holes around the bottom of the drum, centered 1.75"
from the bottom, then threaded 1" pipe nipples into the holes and
secured with 1" conduit lock nuts on the outside of the drum.

The vertical pipe is 30"s long and keeps an
old fat man from rolling on the ground!!!!
Sheet magnets are available at Craft and Hobby Stores.
As long as they aren't near the heat, they work wonderful!

That drum smoker is really nice looking, but the pipe nipples just took it to a whole new level for me.

With a brand new 1.25" hole saw making the holes, those pipe nipples
just thread right in like it was meant to be...And tight!!! With the conduit
nut locked down I can lift the barrel by the 30 inch vertical pipe like it
was a handle... Hmmmm...I think I'm going to install another of those on the
other side.....shoooottt yeah!!!!!

i thought that maybe you only had 1 air intake. I am wondering if on my next drum if i put a 2.5" intake if that would work instead of having multiples.

Now I'm confused. In the picture I could only see one air intake-the pipe running from the bottom all the way to the top.

Are there actually two more 1" air intakes with no pipe running to the top? Does the 30" pipe keeps an old fat man from rolling on the ground only 1/3 of the time? Are the two bottom ones mostly plugged, as shown? Do you use the sheet magnets on the other two also? Sorry to be so dense.

I do have three evenly spaced, one is vertical, but during yesterdays
seasoning and cook I only had the vertical open and choked. Held 250
all day and part of the evening..I started at 7:00 am and shut it
down last night at 9:30 pm or so...still had charcoal in the basket!!!!!
I watched a video in the recent past that was linked here in one of the posts about Snail and his drum smokers, I think he has one air intake..looked like it could be around 2" or so.. I went with the 1"
because of the hole saw I had and it's working out well. Before I
shut it down last night I opened all intakes wide open and the temp
reached 475 degrees!!!!! You should of heard the grease sizzling and popping... By the way I like your versions of the drum smokers also..Inspired me along with others...
