Anybody planning on doing this contest? My team-mate's real estate office is in DeSoto and we're thinking we can get company sponsorship for this one. It's halfway between Lawrence and Kansas City off K-10 Highway. Are any of you MOFOs or Kansas teams planning on entering this one too?

Just called on it... there are 30 spaces and they have 17 entries already. Entry fee is $175. They are going to email me the info and I'll post it once I get it in case anyone else is interested.

Just got a phone call confirmation yesterday that my team is in. There are about 8-10 spaces left from what I was told. We are in site 12. Wayne? Rod? Kick? Jay? Skip? Last one for almost six months! Grab a spot if you haven't yet!

If you need the entry form, PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you. I had the organizer email it to me.

Hey Wayne... this one ought to be fun! Did you get your info packet yet? According to the site map, we're only three spaces apart at DeSoto. Keep the 'rita machine full, will ya?

In the process of getting packed up and loaded for this contest for this weekend. 30 teams and the only Brethren signed up are Wayne and me. Wayne's team (MoKan Meatheads) were the RGC in this one last year so I'm expecting them to win it all this year. Seems these folks have a pretty nice contest organized from what I can tell and have heard. They've got live bluegrass / folk music on Friday night, Halloween themes, country pickers on Saturday, free biscuits and gravy for teams Saturday morning and electricity and ice are free.

Forgot to mention (and given the fence around site thread conversation) that they're specifically advertising to the public to get out to visit and PURCHASE BBQ plates from the Chamber of Commerce NOT teams!

I'm really looking forward to getting out there first thing in the morning to get set up so I can relax and enjoy and get to know some of the folks, something I couldn't do two weeks ago at the AR. We'll post results either Sat. night or Sunday morning.

Good luck, if you are giving Wayne the GC title, will you be going for the RGC? A Brethren sweep.

Oh trust me... if I have anything to do with it, Wayne will have to WORK for that GC title! I'm not GIVING him anything! But yeah, it would be a cool deal to have a Brethren sweep! There's a few of the local biggies here so it won't be easy: Ribs 4 U, Tom and Josh's Orgasmic Slabs, Munchin' Hogs @ the Hilton and so forth.

Off to DeSoto! Running about a half hour behind getting away but what the heck. It's supposed to be sunny and low to mid 70's all weekend! Perfect for a contest. Let's go take it to 'em, Wayne! See ya there!

Thanks again for the advice and suggestions, guys. Talk to ya'all later!

Results: DeSoto / Kill Creek Farm State Championship

The Brethren were firmly entrenched in the middle of the pack. Difference is Wayne was not happy (for more than one reason) and I was thrilled given the horrible condition of the lettuce and parsley! Anyway, no Brethren took walks but here's how we did in the 30 team field:

Overall:
MoKan Meatheads - 14th
Big Creek BBQ - 15th

Chicken:
MoKan Meatheads - 6th
Big Creek BBQ - 10th

Ribs:
Big Creek BBQ - 14th
MoKan Meatheads - 24th

Pork:
MoKan Meatheads - 8th
Big Creek BBQ - 17th

Brisket:
Big Creek BBQ - 19th
MoKan Meatheads - 20th

Sauce:
Big Creek BBQ - 16th
MoKan Meatheads - 17th

Now, about Wayne's reason to not be happy - around 4am this morning, Wayne took a fall while apparently trying to attend to the smoker or something (was alcohol involed? ) and tried to break his fall with his arm. He either dislocated or separated his shoulder (can't remember which). Lana from Squeal of Approval took him to the emergency room early this morning as he was in a lot of pain. He came back later with one wing in a sling and I would guess some strong pain meds! Be sure to wish Wayne well in his recovery. Who knew BBQ was a contact sport? Wayne buddy, get well! Take it easy and have your wife wait hand and foot on you!

A 15th place of 30 teams was pretty exciting for us given it was only our second contest! I definitely learned 3-4 new tricks that will help us give the judges what they want next season! I'm exhaisted from 2 contests in 3 weekd but at the same time excited for 2006 to take some big strides upward, condense our list of all the crap we haul and if I'm lucky, work on a new rig (including a vehicle and maybe a trailer smoker - Jay, heads up brother!).

Congratulations! Orgasmic Slabs has had a pretty good year.

Middle of the pack beats DAL any day.

Wayne, get better soon - shoulder injuries are absolutely no fun.

I second that! Good showing Jeff! I think you did fabulous for only having one contest under your belt prior. I hope you will share those 3 to 4 tricks with your brothers here. If you don't win, you look to have improvement and it looks like you did that in spades. Good Job!

Thanks... but the tricks are probably nothing an experienced competiton guy doesn't already know... like sandwich toothpicks through thighs to help keep them small, shaped well and the skin in perfect position (I think he did them without the bone maybe?). I also learned what should have been obvious before: cover cutting boards with foil (or just put foil on tables for rubbing). Before, I used a plain cutting board and had a MESS to clean up after each cut of meat rubbed. Don't know why I never thought of it before! Saved a lot of valuable time. I also learned to time turn-ins better instead of being ready five minutes before turn-ins are accepted. Of course it ALMOST cost us when Hank, my teammate, got the brisket turned in JUST BEFORE the lady told another lady to "put the block up" so nothing else could be turned in!!! I was messing with brisket slices after we had to switch last minute because the slices were so tender they fell apart when we moved them! Anyway, while slicing the second brisket, I looked over at the clock and about chit when I saw it was 1:31 pm!! I also learned that garnish sucks! I took forever to get four prep boxes ready because all I could find Friday morning was HORRIBLE lettuce and parsley!

Anyway, I guess I just keep learning valuable information. I expect significant progress next season!

Good showing by both Jeff and Wayne!

No disgrace in being behind the "Slabs", for sure

We have "watched" them walk more than once!!!!!

Always learn something new--makes it all worth the effort.

Get well Wayne.
