Looks good for a first attempt on a real smoker Like DH said fat cap down point to the fire. Your wood looks more like Chip/Chunks than a Split I think that contributed much to your fire problem. I cut mine 12-14" long and 3-4 dia when split. I would not look to using a Charcoal basket they under size the FB on these small cookers putting a basket in there chokes the Flow. Stick with the splits.
