Thanks for the encouragement on burning out the red liner. , I will burn the hell out of it this weekend. I do not have a weedburner but I have pallets and a wire wheel. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I actually got two barrels last night. I thought they were the same on the inside but one only has a light tan liner on it that is actually already flaking off in spots. I think I will work with that one first.

Just a noob here but what I've seen on this site is really,really awesome!
Last September I moved to my own house and it comes with a backyard that is relatively big for a city that I live in,ofcourse you need to take advantage of that so that calls for a good BBQ!
After a good Googling on internet I discovered you guys.
Since I just moved and spend all my hard earned money that I've saved over the past couple of years I won't be going anywhere outside of The Netherlands to go on holidays.
So.....I've decided to spend my holidays in my backyard and start working on my little "summer project".
I wanna build an UDS and a horizontal grill or offset.
Last Wednesday I bought two 52.78 gallon barrels with closed lid that had organic palm oil in it for 12,50 (euro's) each.
Didn't do anything with it yet but wanna start asap to build a fire in it to get it cleaned!
Most probably I'll go follow Norco's design as base combined with some other stuff that I've seen on internet.
I appreciate you guys allready for the time and effort you spend on this site and on me!

well after reading through this thread again... i got started the other day..

the hardest part is done alreaady....found the drum

neighbor had his son visiting him. he was pulling a small trailer to take to the dump. in the back was "My drum" with lid

tomorrow i will be making a trip to my local scrap/junk yard to see what i can scrounge up. i will be making the charcoal basket tomorrow as well.

hopefully i will be done by sunday.

all i know is it was a remanufactured drum...there was still cooking grease in it...lol

What are they?
A recent post within this thread, asserts that these numbers
are DOT numbers, and actually can tell you many things about the origins of the drum.

Help out your Brother's here and either take a good photo or just
post the stamping.

Seasoning question.

OK Brothers in smoke,

I'm going to season my second UDS and I have 2 questions for the group.
1. Why do I need to season, what does seasoning actually accomplish?
2. Can I use shortening instead of peanut oil? I may be cooking for church and I'm concerned about allergies.

Alright one more question, any Idaho people here?

Did my first cook on the UDS today (7.5 lb flat) Stated with the basket about 2/3 full with a combo of Kingsford Comp. charcoal, cowboy lump, cherry and pecan wood. With the ball valve wide open, it maintained a temp of 225*, with a cap opened it went to 275*. At the 7 hr mark, the probe slid in and out like butta with the internal temp reading 205*. Foiled and rested for 30 minutes and then sliced! Came out great very tender and moist. By the way cooked it with the fat cap up.

At the 12 hr mark I saw that the charcoal was still hot and decided to open all intakes to see how high she'd go. At 350* I closed it up to save whatever charcoal was left. I gotta image that it coulda went for another 3 hrs or so:shock:

Wondering why the smoke ring was so thin?

N = UN specification (should say UN according to my sources)
1 = drum
A = steel (H would mean plastic, G for fiber)
2 = open head (1 would mean tight head or closed drum)
Y = Suitable for packing group II or III products (X would be I,II,III; Z would be only III)
1.5/100 = liquids up to a specific gravity of 1.5, drum must withstand pressure of 100 kPa
If the drum were made for transporting solids this part would be a number (kilograms) followed by /S
9 = should indicate year of manufacture, in this case probably 2009
any fields beyond this would indicate country of origin, manufacturer, etc.

I think drums with "100" are 20 gauge, drums with "150" are 18 gauge and drums with "175" or "200" are 16 gauge.

I don't know what "packing group" means, and the actual spec is proprietary.

My new smoker and the first cook...

I like to keep it simple.. For my first cook I bought some Tri Tip roasts from Costco, Turned out very good, even while cooking in the rain. Smoked them for 4 hours at around 220...

Question from a FNG. I found a cache of about 50 drums of which i can have as many as I can haul away. Question is... they had water blown insulation in them. Safe to use? Thanks and i am looking forward to my first build.
