Default KC MO recomendations

I am going to be in Kansas City MO this Sunday & Monday (maybe longer), any Q must do's that you can recommend?

I definitely want the locals recommendations for BBQ restaurants, so many to choose from.

Are OK Joe's & Arthur Bryants still the best or are their newcomers that are better.

I would also like to visit a BBQ store while in town as well.

I am from South Carolina and yes, I am partial to Mustard BBQ sauce, but love all kinds. I also compete in SCBA, KCBS, SBN & FBA, had a good year last year, but going to slow down this year.

I (personally) think Arthur Bryant's lost the "best" status ages ago.

I live pretty close to OK Joe's, so it's the only place I go when people want good restaurant Q.

Which part of town are you going to be in? There's quite a few really good BBQ stores in town.

Yep, as Chris said, OK Joe's is great. Plenty of other places to go to as well. It all depends on where you will be. There have been several other threads with suggestions. You might search for them or I can try to dig them up.

Mods...thanks for moving to the correct thread.

My business will be downtown as I have a hearing before the ZBA board, but I am willing to travel an hour or a little more to get some great Q.

Is there more than 1 OK Joes, is one better than the other?

There are 2 locations. The original is closer to downtown. I only ate from there once and now go to the one in Olathe so I can't really say one is better as I don't recall. The one in Olathe is really good though and it has a BBQ store right next door. There is also the Woodyard BBQ which is right along I-35 south of downtown. Since you are downtown, you might as well hit Arthur Bryant's since it is right there during the day.

Arthur Bryants has the best history but not best Q. Either OK Joes is good. I like the one in Olathe because I hit up the BBQ store next door. Look into Woodyards. I personally also like LCs, but its a bit south and east of downtown (still within an hour tho).

I always forget about Jack Stack for some reason. Probably because I get steaks and such from there, and not so much the BBQ stuff. Great place, I think you'll do good there. Don't go for the traditional BBQ though, go for the stuff that sounds more like a grill chef's creation.

BB's was always good when I ate there, but it's been a long time.

I'm a big fan of Gates, but Gates is a place many people are split on, and it's either a love it or hate it thing. I always get the burnt ends, not that the other stuff isn't good, it's just that I really like their burnt ends.

I'll second Gates, and Jack's Stack. At Jack's try the burnt ends, and the lamb ribs.

Arthur Bryants does have good ribs...just stay away from the sauce IMHO.

I work in KC about 50+ days a year so while I am not a local, I am there pretty often...

Restaurants:
OK Joes either location as everyone has already said...

Jack Stack is a must, one trip there and you will have a different outlook on BBQ, very gourmet compared to most places...

Smokin Guns in North KC is a nice place close to downtown for a quick lunch...

BBQ Stores:
Kansas City BBQ Store attached to OK Joe's in Olathe is good for sauces and rubs, they have a good selection of both for you to sample...

Personal favorite is Smoke 'n' Fire is Overland Park...

Enjoy the trip and have fun. You really can't go wrong

I have been there a few times and have tried Gates, Arthur Bryant's and Famous Daves and prefer Famous Daves out of those three. Next time will be Oklahoma Joe's turn.

E mellow if that is your place in your avatar? I am here in Ballwin but have not made it in there.

Just drive across the river and go to Smoking Guns BBQ. OK Joes and Smoking Guns are some of the best BBQ in KC. Both owned by great competition BBQ cooks.

Oh, I forgot to mention, if you want to have a meal that is not BBQ, go to Stroud's for some fantastic fried chicken

Thanks everyone. Had dinner @ the Hilton Airport last night (Munchin Hogs at the Hilton) It was great and convenient since I got in last night and was staying there. What a nice surprise. I would reccomend this as must stop if in the area.

Heading to Olathe now to the BBQ store and OK Joes.

I might have to give Strouds a try, website looked good and I am a meat & 3 kinda guy.

Any other non BBQ recommendations will be appreciated. Best Ribeye steak as an example.

Stop by and say Hi to Rob, aka Mr. Munchin. He's there during the weekdays.
