I did about 1000 mile round trip one time but not anymore. It’s just too easy and more time efficient for me to have it shipped.

Not a very long one, but this past weekend I drove from Jax-->Orlando to buy a yoder 640. My kamado got smashed in my last move (damn navy movers), and used the money I got back to buy this one, I gotta say though after 3 cooks this week i would have driven all the way to KC to buy it if I had to.

Good timing for this thread. I just got back but, not from a smoker or pit trip.
  • East Texas to Kentucky to get a tractor but, they sold it before I got there.
  • Then to Iowa off I-80 to see a flail and a tractor an hour from the flail.
  • Then to St. Joseph, Missouri for a finish mower.
  • And, back home.

My trip for the Shirley was ~700miles round trip. My WSM's were generally ~300miles roundtrip.

Trips like this are typically combined with 'boondoggles' and various impulse stops along the way like that huge truckstop on I-80 and a random outlet mall place with lots of knives and imported cookware (mainly Henckels related brands).

I've been known to travel to Austin to get groceries (some Julio's chips I can't get locally) so I have an excuse to go to Lockhart for BBQ and West to Slovacek's for some of those Jalapeno and Cheese Kolaches and random link sausages from the cold meat case which is around 400miles roundtrip.

I didn't necessarily mean there was anything wrong with the Meadow creek stuff just that from looking at various other manufacturers they seem to be on the higher end price wise. But again a drive from the Poconos to Lancaster and back is probably cheaper than whatever I would pay in freight or in fuel and time driving.

The driving a distance thing would probably be more for buying a used smoker. I've been looking on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace but there's not a lot in the area. I saw someone selling a Lang 60 in Phillipsburg, NJ for $2000 which is like a 2 hour round trip but from the photos its pretty rusty. The tank is rusted near the firebox all the way to the door opening and the grates are rusted.

I keep looking at the Shirley that's for sale on here but West Palm Beach FL is a haul.

5,237 miles one way.Sorta.I went to Argentina and saw them doing the live fire cooks there. That was the first time I ever witnessed it in person.I was impressed with the site and the food we ate that was prepared that way. When I got back home I had to give it a try myself.I probably would have never tried it if not for that experience.

Most of mine were bought locally or within about 50 miles. The farthest I've driven was about and hour and a half one way to pick up a brand new Hasty Bake Legacy for $450.

Picking up a new smoker is a pilgrimage and an excellent excuse for a road trip with best friends.
