Very cool I'd consider buying one if I didn't have a spare WSM lid and may still since it being blank gives you the flexibility of making any exhaust you want.
The only thing that concerns me though is that it is pretty thin at 18 GA steel.

Looks like a great idea.
Perhaps the lip could be designed with a channel wide enough to account for varying drum sizes and deep enough to accommodate a stove gasket. I know this would add to the bottom line, but there are plenty of people who would pay for a dome solution that would fit out of the box and be virtually leak free.

They can make it a thicker guage steel if we want it to be. Cost was the only reason to make it thinner.

So I spoke to Jeff Earley at Toledo Metal Spinning and he said that they could place holes for vents. The could also add the vent. Jeff said that they could also provide a handle. Both of those would be considered options. This way those that want it can have it. He did say that they do not have the ability topaint them. Keep the input coming.

Working at a stamping plant I would stamp a flat spot on top for a handle to be added later. And also a spot for a vent.

So to date the requests are as follows:
1 - Flat spot on top for handle. 2 - Handle 3 - Vent holes with Vent 4 - Lip edge large enough to accommodate various sized drums and gasket. What else would you like. I will pass the list on to Jeff on Monday. |

Jeesh, cut a hole in the top, add stack type exhaust or a daisy wheel and a handle on the side. Everybody wants everything but they don't want to spend over $50.00?, lolol This is a $70.00 top with just the lip for variable drum sizes. 90% of UDS builders won't consider anything over the cost of a used Weber top purchased on Craigslist. But, I'm in. |

Creating a flat spot on top is easy for them. No added cost. I agree that most people can modify the lid in the way that they want.
Some of these features could be done as a custom job. They are willing to offer options. We just need to give them the basics and they will do the rest. I agree cost is the most important thing to this group. They have heard that. They will do what the can to keep cost down but make a quality piece. They also are aware that there some that would just like to purchase a fully complete item. That is why they are interest in everything that we want. |
