People's Choice
When competing in a People's Choice category, what do you like to cook?
What are some of the reasons you do a people's choice and/or why don't you do that category? And finally what day do you feel works best for this category Friday or Saturday and why?

It doesn't matter when you cook or when for people's choice. What matters is how many of your friends you get to come out and vote for you.
As an event, I absolutely HATE people's choice. Time after time, I've seen the local guy, with half of the crowd cheering, win the People's Choice. Then the same guy ends up with no calls during the real competition and somewhere toward the bottom of the rankings at the end of the contest. Either the judges or the public doesn't know how good BBQ... yeah, right! The people's choice events that I LOVE to cook is when the meat is provided and its all about fundraising or PR for the event. Art of BBQ in Tulsa raises a good deal of money for the art foundation there with their Saturday brisket feed for the public. Two years ago we cooked 8-9 briskets for them and glad to do it. As a contest, I could care less. I certainly wouldn't pay to enter a people's choice. I might supply my own product if it was something cheap like chicken wings.

dont think we ever had a peoples choice in the contests around here. Grilliong contests have "anything but", but never peoples choice.

It is difficult do do here in the north east because the local health department will almost always oppose it. The reason the peoples choice awards have been for vendors are that vendors are the ones that are licensed and safeserve trained and acceptable to the board of health.

To add to Plowboy's comment on Tulsa, we were glad to help out and they provided someone to hand out samples so that we could concentrate on our contest meats. However, the public had to drop their ticket in your bucket to vote. The teams at the contest are spread out over about a quarter mile, our que is good, but I doubt many would walk that far to place their vote. Especially when it's 110 in the shade. BUT- you get in the shade if you do the people's choice!

The Winter Sizzler...they did a people's choice wings Saturday night and pork on Sunday. Each team had to turn in at least three pounds of wings. The organizers provided two butts for each team. The meats were all lined up at a table and in each event, 12 judges voted for their favorite, and whoever got the most first place votes won.
Once the judging was complete, the public was allowed in and devoured all the rest of the food. Chili was actually a Sunday category which counted towards grand champion. Edit... This is actually tedlor70, guess my wife was logged in on this computer! |
