BBQ Joints in South Carolina
Hi all. My wife and I are travelling to Myrtle Beach, SC, next week and would like to sample some Carolina Q. We'll be flying into Charleston and will have some time there, and will also have a car so travelling a short distance wouldn't be out of the question. Anybody have some advice about where to eat?

I live in North Myrtle Beach. Sadly the bbq here isn’t great. A lot of Chains, not many local places. My friends all say I have the best bbq in Myrtle Beach haha. However, Charleston has the best I’ve ever had anywhere. Lewis bbq is great Texas bbq. Best brisket I’ve ever had and the sausage is amazing. They also have specials certain days of the week like smoked prime rib, shaved beef sandwich, and fried chicken. Scott’s bbq is in Charleston as well. It is whole hog bbq done perfectly. You can’t go wrong with either but I prefer Lewis.
Brisket in north myrtle beach is the best local option for that area in my opinion they make a great smoked chicken wing. Also can’t beat the brisket grilled cheese

Lewis, Home Team and Scott's BBQ here in Charleston.
I've heard of nothing good in Myrtle Beach. You could go to the original Scott's BBQ in Hemingway for OG whole hog.

Be careful in the Hemingway location. I’ve heard from multiple people it’s gone downhill fast since Scott shifted his focus to the Charleston location

In Charleston you need to go to Swig and Swine. They serve some of the best restaurant BBQ I've ever had. The pork belly was dead ass on, ribs were great, and the brisket was pretty solid as well. Sides were awesome and prices were pretty reasonable.
https://swigandswinebbq.com/ As for Myrtle Beach I can't think of anything that is worth noting in that area...at least not in terms of BBQ. Good luck and have a nice trip!

Home team, i think there are two locations one also in mount pleasant near isle of palms, definitely lewis bbq, former pitmaster to aron franklin and its awesome. Sticky fingers is a hit or miss in my opinion but still cool.
Lots of cool breweries around lewis bbq also (not sure if you are into that) Have fun! |

Lewis Barbecue in Charleston if you want authentic, Central Texas/Austin style BBQ.

That’s basically the whole story. Most of the high class stuff in the Charleston/Myrtle Beach area is seafood. Once you get below Orangeburg area, you’re out of really first class BBQ country. Sad, but true.
If you want to fly into Columbia and spend a couple of days before going to Charleston, then you’re in real hog country. Think about it.

Thanks for the feedback. I was really looking forward to pulled pork / whole hog with a vinegar based sauce as I thought that's what is to be expected in Carolina. However, good BBQ shouldn't be passed by just because it isn't Texas. I might have to try them all. This might be a fun trip.

I used to suggest Sweatman's, but it is definitely NOT the great bbq joint it used to be. So, all the responses above are SPOT ON THE MONEY.
I will give a breakfast suggestion in Myrtle Beach. GO TO JOHNNY D's!!! It's not one of the hundreds of pancake slop houses. It is fantastic. Especially if you like benedicts and stuffed waffles.

Also, the Sea Captain's house is great. Not BBQ.
Up to Calabash the Seafood Hut is a pile of fried awesome and Berry's seafood is killer for fresh seafood to cook yourself or have them steam it for you.
