Once you get your BBQ tasting how you like it........it would suck to have the commerically available rub, sauce, marinade, etc. disappear and your back to square one again. Good Luck!
This is the way I think, too!
I much prefer to have my 'que rubs homemade, then I am not dependent on finding commercial stuff in a pinch.
I do buy the commercial stuff sometimes to see which way America's tastes are leaning, and for ideas to incorporate in my rubs.

Spicewine's heffer dust has an excellent balance of flavors that I like. Not too much of anything.

The Fiesta Brisket seasoning is long on salt and pepper, kind of sweet too. I like it as a locally available commercial rub.

I tend to buy alot of different rubs, like to try them all. Lately I have been buying the same ones because we have really been enjoying the results.

Chicken - Plowboy or Head Country
Ribs - Maries Gourmet Cherry Rub
Butt - Bad Byron Butt Rub
Brisket - Texas BBQ rub original

I like Mike Mills Magic Dust on Chicken, & Pork But on Brisket I haven't found anything that I like as well as Slabs Beef. I buy it from Hawgeyes.

Plowboys on chicken
Plowboys on ribs
Chris Lilly's championship rub on pork
Heffer dust or Fiesta brisket rub on brisket

I also like Head country's rub a lot and I use a lot of Gordons Grub Rub.

  • Brisket -- 50/50 or 25/75 mix Salt-n-Pepper
  • Pork Butt -- Stubbs
  • Chicken -- Shake-n-Bake
  • Ribs -- Stubbs
Another awesome rub comes from Dollar Tree and is called BLAZIN' BLENDS Memphis Style BARBEQUE SPICE.

or make your own..

My Rub
-2 parts black pepper (fresh please, can use half-n-half with white pepper too)
-1 part Lawry's Seasoning Salt (can use plain old salt in a pinch)
-1 part Chili Powder (mild)

Mike Mills Magic dust is also excellent..

from: Peace, Love, & Barbecue by Mike Mills, Amy Mills Tunnicliffe
To make it a little more hot and spicy, increase the mustard powder and black pepper to 1/4 cup each.

Makes about 2 1/2 cups
  • 1/2 cup paprika
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt, finely ground
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons mustard powder
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 1/4 cup ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup granulated garlic
  • 2 tablespoons cayenne

And yet they all taste so different.

My top 10 favorites ...

Plowboy's Yardbird - Chicken, Ribs, Beef, Fish, Veggies, Potatoes, Popcorn
Plowboy's Beef - Brisket
Head Country - Brisket
Lynch Sweet Rub - Chicken, Ribs, Pork
Spicewine Gourmet - Anything
Slabs Pork - Chicken, Ribs, Pork
Willinghams Original - Ribs, Birsket
Home BBQ Beef - Brisket
Pork Powder - Pork
Cimeron Docs Rib Rub - Ribs, Chicken

For competition, I'd use any one of Slabs Pork, Pork Powder, or Lynch Sweet if I wasn't using my own.
