Default The Aussie UDS build has begun!!!

Today I performed the burning of the drum.

UDS1.JPG

UDS2.jpg

I have also bought my intake nipples and heat proof paint. Tomorrow I will be buying more goodies to get me closer to finishing the magnificent beast.

Questions, I've had a fire in the drum, how do I burn the lid??? And, I've noticed some people have stickers / wraps on their drum smokers, does the heat affect them at all?

Stay tuned, I will keep updating this thread with my progress.

I'd also like to thank the forum and it's members for all the valuable information.

Be careful burning the lid if you are going to use it for a top. It will warp fairly easily.
I stripped mine with paint stripper and then made sure it was washed good and clean, before I painted the outside. I used a citrus based stripper, and it came shiny clean. Good luck on your build, you will enjoy your smoker when it is done!

Sandblasted my lid before performing the Weber mod. But be careful, even the heat generated from glass bead blasting will warp it a little bit. The sides of a drum stay surprisingly cool, no problem with stickers or emblems. 4dueces has a friend that can make custom wraps. You can find some examples of his work in the UDS picture thread.

I've not had any problems with the graphics on any of mine, but I every seldom let the temps go above 300-325 on the drums. Good luck with the build, you'll love the UDS when your done.

Hey 10_Bears!

Great start on your UDS... I've wanted to make one for ages but now I've got a WSM instead. Where in Melbourne are you???

Cheers!

Hit the drum with a wire wheel last night, came up great. If I didn't have such cool colours picked out for it (my football team), I'd consider a clear coat.

SmokinAussie, I'm from Hoppers Crossing, and you? Do you know where I can get a good quality thermometer locally. Struggling with that a bit.

Bloody Hell, you're way out on the other side of town. I'm in Rowville!

You can buy Tru-Tel and ET-73 Theromometers through Amazon. There's just no locally reliable suppliers.

Also, you can get a Thermopen from http://www.rossbrownsales.com.au/index.html but the ones they have are Celcius only versions which p!ssed me off no end.

Cheers!
