Hello everyone,
my question is should I remove the firebox cooking grate from my 24x40 offset when not cooking on it, will it be damaged if left in the firebox all the time when just smoking in the cook chamber?

I would. No need to have it continually exposed to the fire when not being used. It will wear it out quicker.

I agree. I know the one in my Old Country offset has worn faster than the cook chamber grate. The reason is that you'll keep burning the seasoning off the firebox grate and it's exposed to continuous high heat. Of course I made mine worse in the Old Country by at one point trying it out as a fire grate.

I take mine out just so I have more room when loading things up and tending the fire.

I keep mine stored in the deck box with other BBQ supplies. Leaving it in will only burn off the seasoning and wear it out faster. I haven't actually used it yet, but I've used the griddle plate enough to tempt me into buying a gas griddle.
