Either electrically or by hand, but hydraulic. Large enough to handle a typical 1/4 or 1/8 split you get when you buy cut up firewood--but no larger.

I need it for a few reasons:
1) axes are kind of dangerous--I'm known to be a klutz at times
2) the swinging motion isn't kind to my shoulder joint--I've had frozen shoulder in the past.
3) I'm not that strong
4) I can easily and accurately set it exactly where I want it split.

I need for splitting splits into beer can size diameter and even smaller for hotting fires / kindling.

Is there a good one to be had for under $200? (Again a smaller one that could only handle say a 1/4 split.)

I was contemplating fashioning one out of a small cheap car jack and say some 2x4's

Thanks!

Theres this one for cheap. Not electric or gas but doesn't use the swinging motion. And you don't need to be strong.

I have this and its the cat's butt.

I have a wood stove at my cabin. This sits in the back room and I have split a TON of wood with it. I would not be without it now that I have it.

I have not found anything it would not split yet

I got it on sale for $200. Its pretty heavy, around 100 lbs

+1 on this one. Ive seen brethren awscwi's in action worked good. He got it open box for 140 I believe

Have you considered renting one that will make fast work of your wood? Maybe $25 a day. You can split a lot of wood in a day with a powerful spliter. You may only need it twice a year at that rate.

^thats what I do. $45 one day rental for a 35 ton, but if I pick up late on Friday I can return Monday morning for a 1 day rental price; up to 10 hours on the Hobbs meter (engine run time clock).

Search the web or look in your Sun. paper for a Harbor Freight 20% or 25% off coupon. With coupon you will be close to your $200 budget.
