Hey all - Id first like to say THANK YOU. I have been "stalking" this site for a couple months and finally decided to join. I've learned so much and been inspired beyond belief. Thank you!

Secondly, I was wondering if anyone could recommend rib sauce that doesn't contain high fructose corn syrup. The only sauces I've used contains HFCS and they all seem to taste similar. I'm wondering if a sauce without HFCS would provide different flavor characteristics.

Spicy Apple Barbecue Sauce

1 bottle (14 oz) ketchup
1 c. apple cider
2 tbs worcestershire sauce
1 tbs molasses
1 tbs. cider vinegar
1 tbs soy sauce
1/2 tsp. liquid smoke
1 1/2 tbs dark brown sugar
1 tbs granulated sugar
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground cloves

Combine all the ingredients in a large, heavy, stainless steel saucepan and stir to mix. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and gently simmer the sauce, uncovered for 30 minutes. Stir often to avoid scorching.

Welcome to the site! Most commercial sauces are going to include HFCS since it is cheaper than sugar. I suggest you try making your own sauce. It's not that hard. I see onexchef has already posted a recipe that sounds like a good red sauce. Try some out in small batches and then start tweaking the recipes to suit your preferences.

Next... What do you want to sauce? Are you going to sauce ribs while cooking or serve sauce alongside your pulled pork? I don't sauce anything during the cook but frequently sauce when I reheat or serve. One of my favorites is Big Daddy's Carolina style BBQ Sauce which I server with pulled pork. I like Raichlen's Red Eye Sauce for brisket.

There is only one ketchup that I know of that doesn't have it that is Hunts. I'm not a big sauce guy especially on ribs But this one is good on everything.

Texas Red Sauce

This is a thin sauce, and good on all
BBQ.

1/2 cup cider vinegar
1 cup Hunts ketchup
1 cup water
6 Tbl white sugar
2 tsp salt
2 tsp chili powder
1tsp back pepper
1Tbl New mexico chili powder
1 Tbl paprika
2 tsp Cholula hot sauce
1/2 tsp med grind Black Pepper
In a microwavable bowl or large measuring cup combine vinegar, water, sugar and spices.
Heat on high 1 min stir to dissolve sugar allow to cool 20 min. stir in ketchup and bottle.
Allow to sit at least 4 hrs or overnight.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll be fixing me and some buddies ribs next weekend and we'll have us a sauce sampler!

Gates has no HFCS, you can pick it up at Schnucks and some Walmarts are carrying it now.

Since my pops died from Cancer - we cut out a lot of preservatives and things that prompt cancer growths. Good thread read; will try out the sauces.

You can try "Bull's-Eye" barbecue sauce, they don't contain HFCS:

(edit: after reading around the web, it seems like that's no longer true for Bull's-Eye sauces ... shame)

Not sure where you are, but here in Houston, the stores will also have some regional/local sauces that don't contain HFCS and are pretty tasty.
Lastly, it's pretty easy to make your own small batch and experiment .

Bulls eye still advertises as no high corn fructose corn syrup.
For home made,
You might try the shark attack recipe for a vinegar hot sauce.
Or roxys mustard sauce if you are a fan of mustard.
Lots of red sauce recipes onsite also. If you look at smoke signals magazine previous issue, wicked good bbq sauce recipe is nice.

Bone suckin sauce has no HFC, we are very conscience of what's in our food so I went diggin one day and found this, but I haven't bought any so I can't vouch for its flavor.

Also, you need to be careful and read the ingredient list, even if you think you are buying the same product at different stores.

Case in point....

There is a local BBQ joint down here in Atlanta area called Williamson Bros. BBQ....awesome BBQ sauce IMHO.

They sell it at the local stores, Publix, Walmart, Kroger, Whole Foods, etc.

I realized however, they are making 2 different batches of the original sauce. One catered to the Publix, Walmart, Kroger, etc. and one for Whole Foods. Same exact tasting sauce, however, one has HFCS and one has sugar. The Whole Foods sauce uses sugar and where it's sold elsewhere, uses HFCS.

Now the Whole Foods is more expensive of course, by about $1.50-$2.00.

So if you find a sauce you like and you buy it at one store and it has real sugar and you find it at another store for cheaper? Check to ingredient list and make sure it still has sugar and not HFCS.

Or you could try no sauce at all. If the ribs are cooked right, sauce is an afterthought, not a necessity.

On sugar in ketchup, around here, there are two versions of every major brand. One is regular (HFCS), and the other version is "natural" or "simply". Meaning they use sugar. Heinz, Hunts, and even HEB make HFCS free versions of their regular versions.

I just picked up some Weber "Buzz'n Honey"... don't know if this is a new line of sauces from Weber (I've never used Weber sauces before). It caught my eye (not only b/c it was on sale) because it is both gluten free and contains no HFCS. It's pretty darn tasty...

Got my hands on some Bone suckin sauce and it is good. Very sweet and spicy. My only complaint is that it is very runny, but they also sell the original flavour in a thicker consistancy.

I can get Williamson Brothers sauce at Whole Foods? I really like their sauce, ever since I got some from Redheart.
