Also, some galvanized products contain lead. I would in all seriousness, stay away from galvanized metal when heat is involved, you just never know. |

Smoker, In the last pic of your slide show, that appears to be a diffuser of some type. Is that your own creation? I've concidered trying something to help even out the heat, and that looks interesting. Others have said using a diffuser, would cause more fuel use... wondered if you found this to be true???

Wheel Basket
Looks like a great idea...especially if you got busy with a grinder and drill to increase airflow and lighten it up a bit. I'm going to whip one up this weekend and will post the results.

That diffuser did get the drum temps to balance out to within 15 degrees after 1 1/2 - 2 hours from the center to the sides. My goal is to get the center and the side to within 10 degrees without choking down the fire and drum ventilation. Here is my first latest revision, haven't had a chance to try it out yet; |

Have you considered an inverted conical shape? Not sure how this would affect the airflow but it seems logical that if the heat was in the middle and hit a downward pointing cone and then diffuse up towards the outside. Another thing might be to come up with a design where you can have two overlapping plates that could rotate to close to eliminate temp spikes when the lid is off. Are you using a CNC machine or something similar? I wish I had access to such toys. You can also send any "failed" attempts my way

Similar to cast iron, grease it up and get it up to temp for an hour or more. Then you are good to go.

Great idea Chaddie. I think that's how I'll do my XL UDS when I get around to it. Very cool indeed.

Thanks for the insite about the lead in galvanized pans. I will go for the suggested cheap pizza pan or check the water heater pan.
