Where can I get a decent carving knife?
I need a good carving knife that is not gonna cost me an arm and a leg. I don't want to order from online as I need it sooner than that could happen. So, where can I get one? Thx o wealth of wisdom that is the Brethren!

Check out Bed Bath and Beyond. They have a decent selection at a reasonable price.

I'd second that. Also, I've found some of the cheaper brands they carry work just as well as the big names. If you have a HomeGoods or TJMaxx type of a store they often have some pretty good knives.

Wherever you go check out the Victorinox w/Black Fibrox Handle series. Highly rated knives for half the cost.

Here's the set I looked at buying last year:
http://www.buy.com/prod/victorinox-f...203474641.html Ended up that BBaB carried it, but not in store. Couldn't find any one else who carried it in store, except I think Sur LaTable, and you have three of them to check out. I ended not buying it for one reason or another, but looks to be a decent, affordable set. dmp edit: You said not gonna cost an arm and a leg, so I was thinking a carving set for under $250. If 80-100 is still too much for you, still go to BBaB. They have Wustoff knife only for about $65 and a Calphalon set for about $45! Hope they carry them in store! |

I found mine at a local restaurant supply store. Great quality, decent price. If you are like me, you will find all kinds of cool things while you are there.

I sure like the Victorinox w/Black Fibrox Handles that I have. They are cheap and highly rated by all the reviewers. Look them up on Amazon and read those reviews. Well worth the money.

If there is a restaurant supply store nearby, you cannot go wrong with the Sani-safe knives for a value knife. The Victorinox is also a good value, too light for my taste, but, you might like a light knife. And in a real pinch, go to a tackle store and get a large filet knife, with a little practive, they work as a slicer as well.

Go to the restaurant section of Sam's and Costco. I have had great success with the white sanitary handled knives both places sell. They're cheap, hold an edge and they have all kinds of sizes.

I would fork out the extra bucks for a good forged knife from Henkels, Messermeister, Wusthof, Shun, etc. Skip the no-name stuff and the lower end stamped lines from these brands. A good forged knife will last you forever if you take care of it. My dad and I have bought two or three cheaper knife sets and finally got fed up with them so we're slowly building up a set of Mesermeister Meridian Elite knives since that's what a local shop carries. They're pricey but you can feel the difference immediately and they have held up much better than our cheaper knives.
There is nothing wrong with cheaper knives if that's all you can afford, that's why we bought all that stuff before. But I would recommend saving and spending 2x the money on something better. |

I would go to Rest Depot or another Rest. Supply house and buy the knives there.
I have several Wusthof knives and tend to use the ones I got at Rest. while the other sit in the storage block. The only Wusthof that I really use is the chef's knife. But again, most of the time I use he cheaper ones from RD

Or, you could get on that Harley and shoot over to San Diego and borrow one of Big Brother Smokes carving knives, I bet he has several real nice ones.
