so i have a basic UDS three intakes in the bottom with two nipples and one ball valve. i recently got a Weber lid and am going to add a second rack. I do not have access to a welder so all upgrades need to be w/o welding. what are some recommended upgrades?

Dont seem like u need much else - you can add elbows and risers to your intakes but it's not nesecary. Can add a side shelf. Can add an ash catcher pan to feet of your burn basket.
I would add brisket myself.

I'd probably add another ball valve so you have more air if you need it also if you don't have an ash pan i'll show you a pic of one i made out of a drum lid.

I added a couple of handles to mine. No welding, just stainless nuts and bolts. I keep mine pretty basic and very ugly. I don't need all that other crap getting in my way, but I sure think the upgrades look cool as heck!

Hinged lid, wheels, side shelfs? Of all the upgrades I made, my favorite is wheels. Makes it much better to put away after the cooking. Second favorite is 2 grills, I can cook meats on the bottom and snacks on top. Open lid and grab top grill to set on table, close lid. Minimal interference to cook. Pugi

My first ever usage of a barrel cooker was for cooking large amounts of chicken, this is how we did that.

Chicken halves hang off SS hooks.

I just made my first UDS, decided to incorporate this into the UDS. I drilled 8 1/2" holes just under the rim. 3 for rods to hang from, 2 for additional exhaust. we'll see how it plays out...

If you plan on competing, keep a pair of Channel Locks handy. We had a cap rust on to one of the pipe nipples. Didn't realize it until we were getting ready to light the drum @ 2 AM in the parking lot of the Topeka Expocenter for a contest. Not the easiest time to bum a pair of pliers from a neighbor team! As soon as I got home from the contest, I replaced the pipe nipples w/ high heat flexible magnets. Works like a charm and have had zero issues managing temp!

Guess you could buy an overpack drum and put 4" sand in bottom, put your UDS in it, run intakes through overpack drum then fill sides in with sand to top and have a very well insulated UDS.

And very heavy. We do competitions so this would make it a little tough to move from place to place

Meh...you were already supposed to have added wheels
