I have a Good One Open Range as well as the larger Good One Marshall and they are both great smokers. Pretty much set it and forget it and is one of the easiest smokers I've used to dial in temps and holds pretty steady temps. They are kind of fuel hogs but are very easy to use.

I agree. Start off with something forgiving and cheap. I would go for a meatloaf or chicken thighs.

You just keep looking at the websites , the YouTube videos and threads on here until something speaks to you and you buy it .........and then you do it again and again and again ..............
.
.
.
And then you get a nice little family of cookers and it grows and then One day you go out into the backyard or in the garage or your cooking area and you say - Holy Chit - why do I have so many smokers and cookers? Then you sell a couple and then something else catches your eye and you buy it.........

I went through the same thing a couple of years ago. I narrowed it down to the Humphrey's Weekender and the Backwoods Chubby G2. Due to price I went with the Weekender. However, Backwoods now has the Chubby 3400 with free shipping. I would take a close look at that since shipping for the Weekender was $300 and that is a big chunk of your budget.

Save some money because if you hang around here too long you will be wanting to buy all kinds of stuff. Trust me...I know.

Look at the American Barbecue Systems All-Star. I have had mine for about 1.5 years and love it. Easy to dial in and hold temps solid. I don't feel like it uses too much fuel. Works great with lump charcoal and wood chunks. I've also used briquettes with success, but prefer lump.
