Default UDS "electro-damper" mod project

I want to build my own, just to see if I can.... I am starting with this fan:
http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/438...b04-400-0.html

It is 12 volt, .25 amp, rated at 8.5 cfm. Others have said the rating of the fan inside what they have is higher than Guru / Stoker rated it... So I went a little bigger than the 5 cfm I think my UDS will need.

I am going to build a housing to go over the 1" nipple already on Robot out of Aluminum diamond plate and .030 airplane skin scraps. I will insulate the connection with silicone sheet. I can test the fan / housing without a controller by using a 12 volt battery for a power source....

I am still deciding which PID / controller to start with. I may just buy the charcoal smoker controller from Auber Instruments for $75.00 that includes temp probe and power supply:
http://www.auberins.com/index.php?ma...00432804d31619

Or this fan should work with a guru or stoker if I decide to go that route...

Of course, you would need a 12 volt power supply for the one listed above.

Thanks for sharing.

Although this thread reminds me a of a problem that Amir, the man that wrote the program for "Stokerlog" told me a few years ago when I first got my stoker and 25cfm fan and had problems, it also makes me wonder why you would need an air induction for a uds at all. But in the progress of science let me ask, will the fan you have have a separate power supply? If so, working with the stoker could eliminate a problem my stoker has with the larger fan (25cfm) I would love to get rid of.

This fan and some of the PID controllers (like the one Norco linked to) can use 12 volts. I am thinking of running it off a lawn tractor battery I have. The controllers use only about 3 watts, the fans 200 watts maybe... so total draw is less than .3 amps... a 19 amp battery can run the rig for 24 hours no problem.

wiring the fan direct to the battery is possible, or wiring it direct to the power supply is possible... is that what you are asking?

Or I can use one of the many orphan 12 volt power supplies I have collected over the years..... lots of good junk in that 'ole garage!

Why on a UDS at all? I did see some 20 degree temp dips towards the end of a 4 hour rib smoke, (on 1/2 chimney of K-blue) rolling robot around raised the temp... (shaking the coals I imagine)... I am getting ready for the 12 hours low and slow giant brisky smokes.... worry free! did I mention I like toys?

Here's my custom fan/controller. Picked up the fan from MicroCenter. Had the adapter made at work. Grabbed a 'busted' heat controller from work. The up button on it is finiky, but it works if you mess with it.

i assume you meant thermocouple. they sell those on the website, you could probably use any "normal" type as long as it's supported by the controller, or you can do what i do:

just twist the ends of the thermocouple wire together to form the junction - basically what's going on inside any stainless part of a probe anywho. also sold on website - but any HVAC place or decent hardware store should have it

Gotta say this: you guys are all pretty cool.

Now, my kid would want to install pocket protectors (for ink pens) on us all, but what does he know? ;)
