Buy the cheapest soldering iron you can find. Drill a big enough hole at the bottom of the can to fit the iron in. Burn out the can. Soldering iron into the hole, fill with wood chips. Cover the can with foil, poke some holes in the foil. Plug in the iron.

Also A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker. Pellets are much more readily available and burn longer because they are compressed. A full maze will burn almost 11 hours if needed.

Quick & simple, I've been using this for a few years now:

Tin can, open with a can opener 1/2-2/3 around. Empty, clean, & remove wrapper.

Use a church key to punch a hole in the other end.

Fill can with wood chips from the end opened with the can opener, push an unused soldering iron through the hole made by the church key. Start smoking.

JM2C I tried it & didn't like it not a clean enough burn. so I came up with this method it costs Nothing

Items required
1 28 oz tomato can
1 16 oz progresso sou can
a small piece of Aluminum foil
church key
wood chips
3 briquettes

turn the 28 oz can bottom up and use the church key to make this

drop in 3 lit briquettes

fill the smaller can with chips of choice

drop on top of the briquettes and cover with foil punch holes for the smoke to escape

place in your pit open the exhaust and crack the intake

This will burn for 4 hrs and give off clean smoke and no heat to speak of

Remember to burn out the can first. All cans these days are lined with plastic, it won't kill you, but, it will put out funky smoke.
