new braunfels smoker - whats it worth?
Im no expert, but this looks like the charbroil version and thus not worth a whole lot. Any feedback on the model and what would you guys consider a good price?

Thats why I got rid of One I had as well.......That Being said ..Many people have good/ ok luck with these after doing some mods.
I would recommend a fire basket , A Baffle plate at the fire box/ cook chamber meet to keep the fire out of cook chamber and a few other mods as deemed needed after use. If you get it . Search long and hard on this forum and you will finsd what others do to make these work a bit better .... Me I was always chasing temps and fire control . Good Luck

It looks like the Silver Smoker. I gave mine to a friend who said he would give it a good home. I was moving and had to make space. I think they cost $150-$170 new 10 years ago. I'd say $65-$75 is a reasonable price on either end. Like all things, it's worth exactly what some one will pay for it.

I would not pay more than about 30.00. If you are spending 100.00, you should just order one of the Pitt Barrel Cooker for $200.00. You will spend close to 100.00 fixing all the issues with the NB smoker.

I just picked up a 2nd one this summer in this same shape for $40 to give to a friend. Like dmprantz said in the previous post $65-$75 would be a fair price as long as the bottom of the fire chamber is not rusted to bad. The left 1/3 of the cooking chamber will be a lot hotter than the rest without any modifications but manageable with proper fire management along with rotating your meat. This is a good cheap starter offset if not cooking more than 2 full briskets or 4 butts at a time. Found an old pic with 2 briskets on.

Indirect cooking is the way to go with that. leave firebox empty and start a small minion fire in the cooker area closest to firebox. You still control air by the firebox intakes, but all the fuel is in the main box.
This setup makes for a pretty efficient cooker. Ribs, chicken, you name it, it'll do it.. but you aren't wasting energy trying to heat up the outside firebox, then push that heat through the cooking chamber.

I picked up a Black Diamond for $70 in similiar shape. I completely restored the smoker including:
~fully welded charcoal basket ~baffle ~extended the chimney ~gaskets around the door ~expanded metal framed grates ~found an original New Braunfels thermometer I spend about $90 -$100 to fix it up and it does a good job.

I'm not entirely sure that is a char-broil model of the NB Silver smoker, it could be one of the last made by NB before char-broil got involved. That said, I believe these are best used as a nice charcoal grills which is what I did with mine. They are ok to start out on but there are better ways to spend 100 bucks in my opinion.

thanks for the insight guys. Saw it in a guy's yard and he said he'd take $50 for it, but Im sure he would take less. I think Ill let it go, sounds like more work and money would be involved than Im willing to put into it.
