Just wanna add that i havent seen this type of charcoal basket on here yet, but if it has been i apologize in advance.
I am building and the only ash pan I could find was galvanized. Since is is for ash collection only with that be OK?

In the last pic of your slide show, that appears to be a diffuser of some type. Is that your own creation? I've concidered trying something to help even out the heat, and that looks interesting. Others have said using a diffuser, would cause more fuel use... wondered if you found this to be true???
Have you considered an inverted conical shape? Not sure how this would affect the airflow but it seems logical that if the heat was in the middle and hit a downward pointing cone and then diffuse up towards the outside. Another thing might be to come up with a design where you can have two overlapping plates that could rotate to close to eliminate temp spikes when the lid is off. Are you using a CNC machine or something similar? I wish I had access to such toys. You can also send any "failed" attempts my way :-D
I have been trying to figure out what is meant by seasoning the UDS. I have seen a couple people say that they used Crisco to season/coat the barrel. Could someone explain to me exactly what is meant by this or the proper way to do it.
