Default 22.5 Weber Kettle Grate Temps

Unfortunately I do not own a Maverick or any similar thermometer. I only have an instant read, and a tel tru I stick on my kettle lid damper. I hope someone can help me out here. If my lid temp is at 300F, the grate temp is higher or lower?

Over the coals, higher.
Indirect, lower.
Each by about 30 - 50 degrees.
This has been my experience so far.

A $4 oven thermometer at the grocery store is a good quick fix to know your answer too.
that is what I use on my weber kettle. I move it around to know temp over direct
and then use the tongs to put it to measure indirect heat, I find it very helpful as it tells
me the temp of where I want to put the meat.

Can you stick your tru tel through a piece of potatoe or something & place it where you need a reading, keeping the tip & unit off the metal?

Use you your hand just over the grill

5 seconds = Low
4 seconds = Medium
3 seconds = Medium-High
2 seconds = High

unless you practice holding your hand over a candle or have some crazy nerve damage this should work really well and accurate
