Default First Cook on the 85 gallon UDS (pron)

First cook on the Big Ugly. Two butts, drum held temp well. Only problem was I used royal oak lump and it burned out really quick. I had it pretty shut down on both ends but it still only lasted about 7-8 hours. Had to reload Friday I did a test burn with Kingsford Bricks and it held 250 for 14+ hours. Anyone else have this problem??? Those Butts looked really small on the 85gal UDS..lol

Anyway.... they turned out great. Everyone raved about it. Unreal smoked taste!!!

Looks fantastic!
When I run lump, runs hot and burns fast. I cook better with kings ford briquettes.
I've seen several posts of pics where folks mix the lump and the briquettes. May try that...

I'd like to see the size of your charcoal basket. That sounds about the burn times I'd get using lump in my 55's. A 10lb load of briqs were more than enough for anything I've cooked.

Its the same size as your common 55 uds. It works great with bicks. I just don't like the way the bicks smell. I thing I will use my bigger basket next time and put the bricks on the bottom. That way by the time I need them I should everything wrapped by then.

All I use now is Kingsford Blue bag. I used to use RO and just can't get the extended time that the Kingsford gives.

If you don't like the k blue you might try the k comp. no funny smell and burns a little hotter, but still get long burn times (16 hrs +).

ATC's will increase your fuel mileage by several hours usually.
