my New Charcoal/wood grate
Well we got my new wood/charcoal grate built for my offset last night. took 2 pizzas, and about an 18pk of miller lite but we got it done. It only took a couple of hours. and i think it will suffice for what i need it to do. used 1"x1/4" angle iron for the frame and the supports.built it approx 4- 4 1/2" off the floor. and the expando was not the thickest but we cut it to fit opposite of each other and left them unwelded so when they do burn out all i gotta do is pop in a couple of new pieces. here are the pics. let me know what ya think.
I dont like the way my door was made on the cooker it made it difficult to get a grate in big enough to slide in and out thanks to the flanges on the door opening. so my grate is a little smaller than the fire box but it works. I had been just trying to keep the coals going on the bottom. had used a wood fireplace rack. but it didnt work very well so hopefully this will make tending the fire alot easier.

Looks good FatDad. Good call on not welding the expando in. If you had built the grate wider, could you have slid it in through the door at an angle? You could also add 4 sides to the grate to make it taller and hold your coals in better.

This is a stick burner. so i didnt figure i needed a basket of sorts. also as it is i have to angle it in to get it in. Ive got another 10' piece of angle iron so when i get to my stepdads we may do something else with it and see if we can make a bigger one or i may use it as the shelving for the tuning plates and baffle i wanna install.

That looks very nice. It you were going to be using charcoal I would say the expanded metal has too fine a mesh. Being that it is a stick burner I think you will be fine. Either way... smart move not welding it in.

If the ash has trouble falling through, just stir the coals or give the expanded steel a good "wack" with a log when adding to the fire. Works for me.
