Pork in the Park -Salisbury, MD

Cool Smoke Grand

Fat Angle BBQ 4th >>>>>1st Brisket

I couldn't be prouder of my former teammates. Loren (niece), Steve (Loren"s squeeze) and Scott (Steve's home boy). This is their first KCBS contest on their own and 4th out of 61 is some dam fine cooking.

That's three for Tuffy Stone (Cool Smoke) just this year, right?

Just got back... Excellent contest & very well run.

A ton of top notch teams...Came in 30th overall out of 66.. with just under a 602 total.

27th chicken
23 ribs,
49th pork (thought it was by far my best entry of the day go figure..)
Tied for 15th in brisket

Although only made the top half overall, I was extremely pleased with how all of my entries turned out and thought it was my best overall effort to date although the scores were to the contrary... The Spicewine worked extremely well.

SmokeInDaEye was an excellent teammate and made a great smoked crabcake that took 13th in Anything Butt. Sledneck was a big help too although he cooked with Nancee & Greg of the Purple Turtles.. Thank you to both....

We cooked next to Chis (Ique) who got a perfect 180 score on Anything Butt with a killer surf and turf combo dish but came in 24th overall (goes to show how tough a field this was !!!!! ) Great job anyway Chris.. and thanks for your help. We also cooked next to Ron (pigheaded) who took 7th in chicken and 3rd in Anything Butt. I think Steve (YankeeBBQ) took 5th overall under I Smell Smoke.. Got too see many other brethren not noted above as well(DJmarko who judged, Lunchlady, Nitrofly,)....

AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO POOBAH FOR CALLING ME REPEATEDLY ON MY CELL PHONE BETWEEN 1:20 and 1:30 during brisket turn ins !!!! Seems his watch was a bit too fast and thought it was after 1:30 when he called..

Wow, what an experience. This was my first competition on my own and I had some good help. My son in law Mike, nephew Brian and his best friend Rob. What a learning experience! I was next to Vinny and two away from Chris. I met a lot of Brethren (Clint,Sledneck,Chris,Lunchlady,Nancy) and others I'm forgetting at this moment. I had a great time and I'm definitly hooked. I don't think I've ever been as tired as last night when I got home and unloaded the trailer. I want to thank Todd (Plowboy) for his rub and my first walk (7th in chicken). I came in 19th overall, 7 in chicken,46 ribs,18 pork,30 brisket, 3 chefs choice and 29 Perdue Chicken. I will remember this experience forever. The event was run well and the organizers couldn't have been nicer.

This was a great contest. Nothing beats cooking and hanging out with brethren. I pit bitched for purple turtle. Congrats to them for the 4th place pork. I cooked the perdue chicken award friday night and came in 13th. Its was great seeing and meeting pigheaded, i que, yankee, lunch lady. It was a little strange not being drunk but i had an awesome time regardless. Friday night overnite was cooooooold! Congrats to pigheaded( beginners luck:biggrin: ) ique, lunch lady and yankee for the walks. I am definately gonna cook this event next year. Thank you vinnie for driving. Was a great road trip to and fro, lots of laughs.

I forgot to thank Vinny for giving us some of Jorge's delicious jalapino sausage Friday night. It hit the spot.

It was a ton of fun doing some cooking, but also getting to relax and talk to folks. I don't get to do much of that when cooking on my own. I too thought Vinny's entries turned out great, especially learning the Spicewine's temp control under pressure.

As for the grilling entries I did, I discovered that I left everything for the Purdue chicken contest in my fridge at home so had to improvise on the fly. Didn't work out to well, but it looked nice! The smoked crabcakes turned out great and brought in 2 9-9-9s, but Chris had 9s across the board so whatcha gonna do?

Friday night was brutal when the temp dropped but the two days couldn't be beat. Lunchlady, Scully, Nancee, Greg, IQue, Pig Headed, etc. were a ton of fun, and I discovered ash rub.

Here's pix of the turn-ins. Sorry about the pork. I had to shoot it upside down because of the sun glare.

Must warm your heart Rich to see your former apprentice do so well in his first contest. That new Meadow Creek of his is sweet.

It was great to see all the Brethren, I had a blast despite bombing my bbq entries. I'll be in Norfolk next weekend, if any Brethren are attending swing by for a cold Harpoon.

Congratulations to all Brethren Competitors. I wish I was there to enjoy the contest with my North Eastern Brothers in Smoke, but our season starts with BBQ on the Farm next month. I look forward to seeing you all during the season. God bless you all and I hope to see you all soon.

I look forward to seeing you all during the season.
You will, in less than a month. :-D
Congrats to all those out there representing the Brethren.

Sticking with those drummies, eh Vinny?

Sticking with those drummies, eh Vinny?

The supermarket made the decision for me on Thurs. evening... I was gonna buy some thighs in addition to the drumsto see how it goes but they only had boneless, skinless thighs so I passed... I'm gonna continue sticking with the drumsticks long term... Much easier to cook, hardly any time to trim and I don't think they impact the scoring...

These were my chicken scores :

Appearance : 9,9,8,8,8 and one 7 which was dropped.
Taste: 8,8,8,7,6 and another 6 which was dropped
Tenderness: 9,8,8,7,7 and a 6 which was dropped

Oh what fun.....

Hey gang.....this is Brian.....I cooked with my uncle, Ron (Pigheaded), for this comp. I must say, I had a BLAST! I live near New Holland, Pa and have attended some of the comps there, just as a spectator, and assisted my uncle in Dover, when he cooked with another team, last October. I have to say, I am hooked. It was great to meet everyone and see some of their rigs. Vinny....those sausages you hooked us up with Fri night were awesome......and I'm not one for spicy food. I ended up assisting as "Pit Bitch" and "Garnish Artist Extrodianaire". Definately need some work on getting the garnish right, but that will only come with practice. The funny thing is that I thought the worst turn-in box that I prepped was in Chicken and that was one of the best scores that we got in everything from tenderness and taste to appearance...I guess the taste of the chicken really pulled the wool over the eyes of the judges on that one. Anyways, it was great meeting everyone and I can't thank my uncle enough for the experience and look forward to helping him throughout the year.
