Here is a tool with many uses. Pretty cheap. Will help when wiring screws up and is also a temp meter. Most of this type use a type K which is what a thermoworks meter uses.

TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS
WARNING:
To avoid electric shock, disconnect test leads
from any source of voltage before making a temperature
measurement. Be sure that the thermocouple has been
removed before changing to any other measurement function.
1. Insert the type K thermocouple probe into the
Temp and COM

jacks.
2. Turn the rotary switch to the
oF or oC

position.
3. Read the temperature on the display.

For us (me) that know virtually nothing about electricity ... what is the benefit of having a meter hooked up? Will we know we are about to max our limit and turning on another item will trip a breaker?

Any good amp meter hooked around the hot lead of your circuit will tell you how many amps you are pulling. Mine is an IDEAL meter with AC/DC amp readings. You can also leave it hooked up for a while and it will tell you the max amps you drew, But the cheaper ones are not to be left hooked up. Anyway Norcordneck is right Do not leave home with out one, They have many uses.(blown fuses, trailer lights, etc)
