Default Results Of My 1st BBQ Competion in Mariposa, CA (Heavy Pr0n)

So after starting to get into BBQing over the summer (wife got me a smoker for fathers day/bday) I decided to enter my 1st competition on 9-22-12 this past saturday in Mariposa CA called the Blazin Hog BBQ Competition. There were 25 spots available and only 14 teams competed. In ribs we took 7th and in tri-tip we took 6th. I recognized Barts Blazin Q from Livermore and Bad S BBQ out of Sunnyvale. I met Dave from Barts and Ryan Pang from Bad S BBQ and I have to say those 2 guys are some of the friendlest, nicest guys I've met. Dave actually came over and introduce himself him to me toward the end of competition and I was in the spot next to Ryan & Bad S BBQ. It was one of the best times I had with my dad working as a team and just the overall experience of a BBQ competition was awesome. We definately have been bitten by the BBQ bug and will be back next year. Now on to the pr0n!

Here is my dad and myself right after setting up in the am

Our team name tag

Festival Program

T-Shirt

This was in our goodie bag

Ryan kept telling everyone that I was Chaka from the BBQ Sauce...LOL

Mustard on the ribs

Injecting the ribs with a mixture of apple/pineapple juice & brown sugar

Trimming the spares (thank god for electric knives!)

Ribs racked and ready to go into the smoker

Prepping the ribs

Adding the dry rub

Adding apple slices to the drip pan

Adding pineapple slices/juice to the drip pan

Adding grape juice to the drip pan

Ribs racked & ready to go into the smoker

Dad injecting the tri-tip with apple juice and butter marinade

Seasoning the tri-tip with santa maria rub

Pops about to light the smokers

The wife helping to build my box while the meat smokes

Adding honey, agave & maple syrup before foiling

Cant forget the brown sugar

Adding pineapple juice to the foil

Spritzing the ribs with apple juice after removing from foil and placing back on grill

Ribs sauced and glazing up

Cutting the ribs trying to find the best ones

Here they are in the box

Right before turn in

Dad searing the tri-tip

Slicing the tri-tip

Dad & Mom before turn in

Now we drink a cold one and wait

Thank you all for looking and like I said it was a blast!

Excellent, especially for a first time competitor. Congrats. Oh, by the way, I think I have the same pitiful excuse for a hat, too... :-)

So, were YOU happy with the results?

My competition daze are probably behind me now; I pretty much cook for family, friends, and frankly the peace and solitude I get from smokin' on an offset...
Was Lang 84DX, now Bubba Grills 250R and many Weber grills

I was very happy with the results especially for my 1st time out and in the rib category where I was very close to Bad S BBQ/Ryan Pang and their calibur of BBQ. It was a close one!

Very cool. What's up with that hanging smoker? A rookie team at a comp in Montana was using one and I thought it was something they found or made, but now I see it's a real deal, got any info on it?
