I have done the butt portion with great success. A little apple juice to keep it moist is all I used and a glaze at the end. Good Luck.

I am fond of the butt portion and have only done two shanks in my life... Rather the but part with the blade bone...JMY2cents

I agree with Bubba. I don't think one cooks better than the other. It's basically the same as a butt vs picnic pork shoulder. One just has the blade and one has more bone (part of the leg bone). Both cook about the same I think. Theyre'll just be possibly a bit more "waste" with a shank just cuz of the amount of bone.

I always get them backwards unless I am looking at them... one of them is a little ham ish in texture, so I like the other which I think is the shank. And usually a little cheaper.

I've done both, but i think you get more meat off of the butt portion. just my thought
