Stanchions or 'Fence-like' cook-site perimeter suggestions?
We need to define the perimeter of our cook-site at the DC competition in a few weeks.
Knowing this is only our 4th contest, needless to say we've not done on-site judging or put up a perimeter. I got a referral to StanchionDepot , but figured I'd also ask here. Any and all help greatly appreciated! Now....I gotta go work on my on-site judge lingo.

I have seen people use foundation bricks and landscape timbers. Works real well as a boundary between sites and any riff raff out you may not want wondering into your site. I was amazed to how many people just walked into out site. One guy just walked in and started eating food we had set out.

I use white plastic fence posts over a 4x4 attached to a16x16 piece of plywood. Added eyebolts and run chain between them. I use white plastic chain to color coordinate. Need caps on the posts for the finished look. Place 10 feet part.

Last time I worked out a deal with the local Lowes. They let me have 46 hay bails at $0.50 each and I could return the ones that were still pristine. We only had 2 bust on us, so other than the effort required loading and unloading hay (itchy stuff), it cost me a $1.07.

I'm surprised the DC fire dept would let you put out straw. Those guys are very picky about stuff like that.
We got our posts from Stanchion Depot. We got the plastic ones (I think it was the "auto show package", or something like that). They've held up pretty well, and for a single event you would be okay with them. Wish I would have bought the metal versions, though. The plastic has taken a beating and really needs to be replaced. |

For areas that need to look nice, we use lattice fencing. Either secure it with zip-ties to our tent posts or drive a metal stake into the ground and secure to that:
http://www.homedepot.com/Lumber-Comp...&storeId=10051 for areas that are in the back and we don't really care how they look, we use the orange rollup barricade stuff which I can't find a link to right now. It's cheaper than the lattice per foot covered.

We use tent legs, banners, and a table to blockoff the front of the space. We have thought about chain and stantions, but are waiting until there is a need.
What is hard to see is that the tents are two layers deep, with the black ones pushed to the front of the space, and a white one behind. The smoker is in the 4th space uncovered.

Not the most attractive but a few years ago in DC I saw plenty of cones with cone bars/chains.
