Do you buy "Clearance" meats?
At both of the grocery stores, they have a small area in the meat section with "Clearance" meats. These are meats on their last day before the "pull date."
I always check that area. I got a two-pack of CNAB ribeyes for ten bucks today. Marked down from 18 bucks. Nice, well marbled, but a little on the small side, which is probably why they did't sell. But, each was big enough to eat with a baked potato, and be very satisfied. Do you farkers buy from the "Clearance" section? What will you buy, and what will you not buy? CD |

Yep. Steaks especially. Take them home and vacuum pack and freeze if I can't use them right then.

I don't buy supermarket meat, so I'd never have to pay the 18 bucks in the first place.. but if I did, I'd definately buy the clearance stuff. Meat regulations are so stringent that you can very much guarantee there is nothing wrong with meat, even if it is days over the "pull by" date..

I do all the time. It is the best way to get deals on steaks. If you don't use them right away you can freeze them. Vacuum seal them if you can. Also if you are going to cook them they can still be frozen and reheated later.
The problem I have is that they just mark them "reduced price" and they are not in a clearance section.

Yep. When you can get a porterhouse for less than half price, why even stop to think about it?

I go shopping at a specific time of the day, when I know all the mark downs will be out, typically between 10:30 and 11:30am.
The wallyworld up the street typically marks down their packer briskets a week before the sell by date, and many times, that particular store has Excel choice packers. $1.34/lb for choice packers is a good deal IMO. **disclaimer** The only meat I'll buy there is choice packer briskets, everything else is enhanced. All my other meats come from HEB, all natural, no salt bath.

When the price is right I do. Bring it home, seal it up and freeze it. I'm usually not too enthused about the quality, but for the price I sure can't complain.

I can get some real nice ribeye steaks that way, about 1/2 off the regular price.

If I am going to cook it immediately, as in that day, I'll buy clearance meats. I don't like to freeze clearance meats.
