I have a regular Brinkmann Trailmaster and I made some modifications to it,to help with heat and smoke control. Would be glad to share,if you like. I expect yours could use the same mods as well. Send me a private message and I can send you the you tube links that will explain them.

I prefer oak or hickory. You can add some fruit wood to help with flavoring. Right now I have been using hickory and cherry. Use what is readily available to you. Good luck with your new toy. Great present!

I suppose.

I have never seen a firebox with a temp gauge on it

it looks like a grill with a warmer in my book

I would like to see what the vents look like

it does say the chamber can be used as a firebox.

My BIL has a regular Trailmaster. The biggest issues are keeping air to the fire and the odd round smoking chamber. He has to keep a door cracked to get enough air. And if you put stuff on the racks wrong they tip a bit. But he can make some good Q with it.

What a thoughtful lady you have. I am reluctant to give opinions, if it were me, I'd exchange it for a WSM. I think you would be happier as far as a smoker goes. If you need a grill maybe exchange it for a performer.

The Bandera 101 sticky has plenty of info about different mods and types of wood to use (and, just as important- which wood to avoid!).
