Just do it! I did not do a practice cook before my first contest and ended up with a 3rd place call in pork. Find someone who can help you with a time line, I think that is more important than a practice cook its self.

Timeline is very important. Start with the turn in times and work backwards in each category. Adjust timing so you limit your time conflicts.

Use one of the published contest checklists and then double check that you've got everything you will need. Our first contest, we woke up Sat AM and realized we had no foil. KC Can Crew rescued us there.

I'm thinking about the Way Out West in Stockton since it's close to my buddy and the field is pretty small.
