Contests as an observer
I know I'm not ready to compete, but I would like to check out the competition, as it were. I am considering roadtrips to American Royal, Jack Daniels, and a few others during the next couple of months. Wha's the deal here? Typically, what is there for curious onlooker to do at these events? Are contestants approachable and willing to share their experiences, or am I to been seen but not heard?
Cheers mates, |

Smile a lot! Try any samples gratefully but don't ask for 'em. Look around your region for qualifier events -- you'll get to see a lot of the big team but the pressure on them won't be quite a bad as at the BIG DANCE!
Have fun, take notes, ask before taking pictures of rigs or prep tables - don't get in the way during the "window" for turning in product. It's OK to drool! :D

Craigster from SoCal has been pushing the Nov 7-8 at Mandalay Bay in Vegas.
In fact, he wouldn't shut up about it today in Chat. Stuck on repeat :)

I don't have enough leave time or money to make it to Vegas even with cheap Tampa - Vegas airfares :D Heck there's a KC qualifier about 30 miles up the road in October and I'll probably miss it, too. Though I am going to try and run up and wander around. I figure a qualifier and state championship event will give me a good look at what's involved. I'm hoping to compete in some local/regional events next year if not sooner.

Don't forget to check for your state BBQ association -- they'll have information on cookoffs, qualifiers, seminars, etc.
For example: the Florida Association is at http://www.flbbq.org/ It's fun to check out the regional stuff -- it gets real competitive and most states have a lot of teams but only a handful that place frequently -- so get out there and kick some butt :D
