$20 well spent there! Most guys who use the weed burner do it from the outside but for $20 you can't go wrong with a sand blast.
No kidding, that's a deal. I had a guy quote me $130 to blast a drum. I declined his generous offer.

ok, If I bang the drum, will my food get covered in ash? if i use an old grate attached to my expando, will i go through more coals cause they are falling through as they get smaller??

No..

Probably not, when they get small they are probably spent anyway.

Here's four tips for burning out a drum.
1. Use hardwood only- it burns hot, doesn't leave a sappy film and smells good.
2. The barrel doesn't have to be upright- it can be on its side and roll it
3. My favorite is to throw the barrels in a big ass brush fire- if you can get near it then its not big enough.
4. If burning near a shop with a compressor, then use a long nozzle air gun and help the fire where you need to- like a black smith. You can cherry any spot!

Having a hard time getting my drum clean. Burned it twice to the point that it was glowing on the outside. I can still see the $%# red lining on about 50% of the inside.

Has anyone tried using a water soluble remover? Also thinking about taking a weed burner to it.

Thanks for any help.
Burned mine three times and still had signs of the liner. Then it was wire wheel and sanding time.

The moral of the story is to stay away from drums with red linings.

after building my first uds and having to get that dang liner out, I have decided that in the future I will buy new. I can get new barrels for 50 bucks. Sure, I can get a used food grade barrel with liner for 3 bucks but to be honest...Im too farkin' lazy to do all that crap again. To me, (and Im cheap) it will be 50 bucks well spent.

Its probably been mentioned in here before but have any of you tried Jasco or aircraft stripper to get the left over liner out? I would figure you could rinse it well and do another burn and be good to go. Plus if its not burning completely out with some of these big red hot fires its probly ok during the lower temps of a smoke. Just curious.

ima try sanding the barrel like a cabinet i want to grind away

then FIRE !

:)

I hear ya' brother. My sentiments exactly. I still have my second drum with the thin clear lining and I am dreading even starting on it. I can get new unlined ones for $48 here also.

If I do try another one I'll probably go strictly weed burner. I live too close to the FD and have a cranky old lady neighbor right next to me. It is kinda fun and the weather is right for it now! Of course when you factor in $17.99 for a tank of propane you are even closer to the $48 for a new one.

You should just ask the FD when you are allowed to burn it out. Forget the old cranky neighbor...you probably are allowed to burn in the barrel

Ready to smoke!

I still need to:
...cut down the four bolts to attach the two handles to the side
...find an ash pan; will use pizza pan until I find El Cheapo Grill
...find a big, domed lid
...fabricate and attach a handle for coal basket
...buy a real thermometer (will order online today)
...learn how to bbq!!!

First UDS just burned in.

Hey guys! Just want to say thanks to everyone for all the info on perfecting the UDS. This is the center of the DRUMOLOGY universe.

I just completed my first drum, and the embers from the first burn are still glowing. Once it's painted, I'll post a pic.

Nice job burt! I just finished mine yesterday. It handles like nothing I ever used before. I have total control of my temps. She is a real dandy. I woke this AM, around 6ish and started some coals. I have a pork shoulder on there now. Thanks so much Brethren!

change to my drum

I put two of these $3 dollar valves on my intakes on my drum.(have a brass one on one of the three) Even at 375 deg. they were cool to touch. The drum seems easier to control now. I change all three at the same time and it seems to burn in three directions in fire pan. I am not one of the Ellette but in my opinion this works great.

Hey guys, new member here. Was inspired to build a UDS by somebody and was refered to this site. WOW. Haven't read through it all. I think I have read about 150 pages. So far so good. Got more than enough information to get me going.

So far I have the drum burnt and drilled. A 0.75" expanded metal grill cut to fit, same size expanded metal 12"x12"x12" charcoal baskett. Just need to scrub the barrel down with the cup brush on the angle grinder, wash it and season/cook. My dad had a hand in the baskett, is the 12x12x12 square baskett suffice or do I need bigger?
