I have a crab apple tree that I want to cut down. is it worth keeping the wood for smoking or is crab tree wood junk?

Junk wood. Totally different then deal apple trees. But you can always try some with some chicken before yo get rid of the wood. If you like it keep it. If not toss it.

Apple wood is apple wood, all based in the same tree family. I have used crab apple with good results. I have no problem with it.

Yeah, it's good to go. Apple trees are all grafted onto crab trees.

Crabapple, Thornapple, and other ornamental fruit trees are all good smoking woods.

If you do a site specific Google search at the bottom of the page you will find many threads on crabapple. The overwhelming consensus is that it is very similar to apple and is a good wood for smoking.

You'll need a good chainsaw, that wood is tough.

THIS! That is what I noticed too. Trying to split that stuff with an ax is farking HARD. Oak, hickory, pecan, cherry, etc have nothing on crab apple as far as splitting.

It IS apple. It's just a wild species. We had one in the back yard when I was a kid. The fruit made some good jelly too.

All good to know and makes sense, we have those crappy trees everywhere here...

You are correct. Thanks for the clarification.

Osage orange /hedge/bois d'arc is not the same thing as crabapple. It is is sometimes called horse apple.
