Whiskey Barrel Smoker

I just made this unique smoker from a 50 year old whiskey barrel (1" oak). It's not complete, as I have to put in the air vents, propane burner, and the smoke stack. It has (2) 22" grates, enabling it to hold 8 full racks of ribs or 12 pork butts. I will have more pics when complete. Any questions, post or email and I will try to answer.

What are you going to do about the wood drying out and smoke escaping from between the staves?

Thanks for replies. Oak burns at 550 degrees and this will never be hotter than 250. It has already dried out all that it will. As you can see, each stave has been screwed into the metal rings. The way the propane will be set up in SS enclosure, flame will not be in any close contact to the wood. Remember, heat rises....so hopefully fire will not be an issue. Now this is an older barrel and I took off the rings to redo. This did cause some gaps in the wood in places. I bought some caulk that is for firebrick/fireplaces. It is a 2000 degree caulk that can be used for this. When it cures, it dries hard as brick.

It attracts attention, even during the build many have stopped to admire. wait til the first smoke!!! I am going to load it and set it by the road.

That is awesome! Where did you get your hands on a barrel?

I was wondering about the smoke stack, but i see you have not finished your build.Post pic's of completed project, please.:thumb:

Undecided about the smoke stack. I dont want to really use 3" stove pipe, because of the size. I was thinking of using galvanized pipe, maybe 1" (x 8-12") and put 2 or 3 of them on there. This way the smoke stack doesnt take away from the barrel appearance and I can use 1, 2, or 3 smoke stacks depending on the load and how much smoke flavor I want.

Here is the Bayou Burner BG-12 I plan on using. It has a max of 50,000 BTU (wont need that much) but I have it matched with a 10psi regulator that can be adjusted for the output.

I thought of the PVC. trying to figure out how to do a 'rain cap'. I was thinking galv pipe and then using a 90 degree elbow
