I keep hearing that people should use cooking oil on the outside of the firebox, but should I only start doing that after the paint has begun to degrade? Putting oil on top of paint doesn't make sense to me. I've had it for about 6 months, and I know it's just a matter of time before the paint starts to break down, but for now it's still in great condition. It's all 1/4 inch steel, so maybe it'll hold up for a long time.

I'd wait until it needs repainting then oil it if that's what I was going to do.

I started using oil when the paint was mostly consumed but still visible and rust has not started. I ended up with a beautiful cast iron pan finish, looks great

People I know who have offsets use straight mineral oil. I have a new Shirley 24x36 and have applied straight mineral oil to mine and it looks like it did before I ever fired it up.

When my old Brinkmann needed repainting, I sanded it down and repainted with Rustoleum 2000 degree paint. It’s held up very well.
