Lone Star Grillz Smoker on Order

Good choice, it's a very efficient design. Are you going with an insulated firebox or anything? I would recommend the 1/2' box at least for more thermal mass and heat retention. I upgraded mine to 1/2", had my cabinet widened from 24 to 30 inches and I also added the warmer/oven which I highly recommend. The oven was $550 extra but the things that you can do with it are limited only by your own imagination. I can smoke at 250 in the main chamber and bake cornbread or simmer beans in the oven at 350 to 400 at the same time! Heck, I cooked a pizza in it a couple of weeks ago! LOL! In the future I'll probably have Chris build me a trailer pit for comps and I'll definitely have him put the oven on there as well! If you haven't seen the video on the LSG site for the warmer/oven here it is. lone star grillz warmer box 2 - YouTube
I thought of a perfect use for that warming oven!

Dry lump storage when anticipating a smoke ;) :heh:

Very good!... A little messed up, but good!:-D
Giving and taking a little ribbing here and there keeps the world a tolerable place ;)

Now back to these LSG's...

The grate space for smoking with that divider plate removed on top of the firebox is HUGE for such a small footprint!!!

I would consider that on mine for the future but I am looking to get a griddle top made (like in this thread but removable)that I can put on top of the firebox when I want to use it and a whole removable oven box would be just too damn heavy to have both options ;)

The $200-250 for the SS griddle top just wasn't in the budget.

Not to hijack this thread, but I've been looking to build a vertical smoker along these lines, but haven't seen the oven, removable or otherwise, can someone throw me some pics of that along with how it is set up?

Did you watch the video above?

NO, at work, and trying to write client reports on a Friday when I would rather be outside.

When you get a chance, watch the video. It makes it pretty clear. It is just a box welded on top of the firebox with a removable divider plate between them and vents on the oven to control temp and a few shelves.

Yeah I guess you would have to go with a really light gage steel for the box if you wanted to make it removable. I suppose 1/8" would be pretty good but it would still be pretty heavy. The griddle idea is cool though and you could probably make one that could go into the warmer and sit on top of the grill top opening. With mine I'd just remove the grates from the oven and then I'd have a 24x24 cubical with a griddle top on the bottom! Hmm! You've given me some ideas to ponder!

The only issue I see with it on the oven is having the door open only give the heat one direction to go...toward the cook :O

I would love to get the 1/2" firebox and Oven upgrades, but I am already spending more than I thought I would when I started looking for a pit. Being that I'm in Central Texas (mild winter temps) and have a good source for free Post Oak, I'm not sure how much benefit the 1/2" firebox would be, other than maybe lasting 200 years instead of 100 years with the 1/4". The griddle idea is intriguing.

I was considering the 30" until I cooked on the 24".
This thing is huge.

I will probably go insulated firebox. I got a good feel for temp. loss due to weather when a PM thunderstorm dropped my Brisket cook by 100 degrees. My friend mounted it on a 5x8 trailer and in the end said he should have just let Chris fabricate the whole thing.

Yeah, it would get a little warm for sure. Maybe a hinged lid on top of the warmer instead of a solid top would help? Just swing that puppy open and then the heat will just rise right up through the top and then you can keep your eyebrows!

There ya go! ;)

Here's a pic of mine that shows you pretty much how it's designed.

God, No telling what I will end up with when it comes build time and I talk to Chris. So many options/decisions!
