Default Max Size Smoker on 20" Diameter Pipe?

Ok- I know about the calculator but what do y'all think would be max smoking chamber width with 20" pipe? 42" - 48" ? I got a buddy who is trying to design and build a horizontal offset with some heavy gauge 20" pipe he got free. I sent him a link for the calculator but trying to decide on width.

I would say max of 48" but depending on what he is using it for (and any space constraints he has), I might not go that big (more efficient fuel use if he goes 36" - 42" IMO.

shiddd.. i would use as much of that pipe as is usable.. it that means 15 feet.. thats what i would use.. Make sure he has enough FB to match up with the Cooker.. is all thats important.. or building twin 20" pipe offsets on a trailer.. mount them back to back.. There is no limit to how long he can make it.. as long as the air moves properly.. and FB size is big enough.. IMHO

My point was not what can be done, but would would be a good everyday functional length (without having to build and fuel an enormous firebox).

Will this be a trailer mounted smoker or a backyard smoker?

Yeah 42-48 would work great. And not be to big for the more everyday use.
That's about the length of my compressor build.
As said be sure the fire box is big enough. So if he's restricted room wise, consider how big the fire box will be added to the cooker length.

I used the Calculator and chicken scratched up a 42" Smoke Chamber with 16" firebox (both 20" Diameter) with 7" overlap and 5"x10" semi circle between them with a 20" L 4" exhaust brought down to 2" above cooking grate and 3ea 2.5" Circle intakes with a single slide damper , 2 piece tuning plate 2" under cooking grate with a series of holes from 1/4" up to 1/2" running end to end (which we will experiment with on total length or width depending how u look at it and number of holes).

Backyard model on wheels.

20" isn't really wide. You also have to figure the area by the firebox won't be used for big meats so immediately eliminate at least 18". I would, at a minimum, want to be able to cook 3 packers and 3 butts at the same time so i would go 6'. I don't think the temp will vary much as long as the firebox is a decent size and the exhaust and intake is figured right.
