Default 55 Gallon Barrel used for motor oil

Hi- This is my first thread here. Can a used motor oil barrel be safely used for BBQ grill or a UDS? How would be the best way to clean and prep it? How do you know when it is clean enough? Thanks in advance for all info.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea. I would not use a barrel like that.

As long as there is no liner in it give it a real good burn then wash it out w/soap water and wire brush but make sure you dry it quick(I used a weed burner to dry it). After that season it and your on your way.
Refer to the Ugly Drum Smoker bible thread for every question you have. It will all be awnsered in that thread. http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=23436

Goto the car wash, and using a strong detergent, give it a good wash. Then, burn, burn, and burn again. Drill your intakes before the burn. It'll really burn hot with them.

What he said. You might even use " engine clean " cycle if car wash has one.

Ever wonder if a high heat burn actually cleans all impurities out of a drum or does it just change the chemical make-up of residual compounds present? Is it possible for the steel itself to be molecularly changed by certain compounds contained there in? Burning just further changing the steel properties and not really cleaning them?
Any chemists in here??

I wouldn't be afraid to use it after a good cleaning. I fgure I've ingested a lot more smoke in my life running 2 cycle outboards, motorcycles, chainsaws, weedeaters, etc.

The key is in the burn. That will remove all the oil from the metal pores, so you can then later replace petroleum oils with Pam veggie oils and then meat dripping oils! Hey, it's all carcinogenic! Burn, baby, burn -- then use it!

OK, you're going to burn this sucker out at what, 600* or so ? After it's burned, wire brushed, scrubed, dried, coated with veggie oil / lard / cooking spray and then heated up to cooking temps it should be fairly safe. Or it should be if you don't run the temps up past 600* . Even my chix temps aren't that high .

Motor oil contains toxins that molecularly penetrates the steel. Personally, I would get a food grade drum. Why risk your health?

Whats your definition of "food grade"? A barrel that's painted or epoxyed on the inside? When that paint is burnt is that safer than burnt petroleum? How poreous is the metal on a barrel? All of this is discussed in "the thread" I think.

"The Thread" is not the last word on toxin residue. There are important considerations to take into account (which is what's going on here) when using a drum that has had motor oil in it.
