Lump in WSM
Having just recently getting a WSM, done three cooks with it and really liking it I have a question. I have been doing the Minion Method with Kingsford which has worked well but it seems to me when the unlit charcoal ignites it produces lot of smoke. Was wondering do some of you use lump instead and any pros or cons vs. the K ? I know lump burns cleaner.

Lump is great, it's all i use. It produces far less ash than briquettes and smells better, imho, too. Some will say that it burns hotter and faster than K, but since that has never been in my WSM, can't tell you about that.

IMHO -Only advantage I've ever seen to briquettes is thier uniform size and shape, which makes loading more fuel into the fire ring easier.
I agree about that smoke you mentioned though, and am not fond of the taste that smoke creates. I use almost exclusively lump in all my WSM's, and, as long as it's loaded carefully, leaving as few gaps as possible, can usually get between 8 and 10 hours on a load of lump ( A little less on the 22" WSM because due to it's larger internal areal, it does use more more fuel.)

I use lump exclusively. Put a glove on and smash it down a bit. It will pack.

I have "made the switch" to exclusive lump in my Stumps. I still use briquettes when grilling simply because I do not want to waste lump charcoal on hamburgers and hot dogs.

I have never had any success with lump in my WSM...I only use briquettes and have never had any smoke issues that you talk about after the initial start up. However, in my Bubba Keg and OTG, I only use lump.

After about 10 cooks on the WSM I tried lump. After a short learning curve (mostly stuff that's been said in this thread already) I knew I liked it so much better that I'm all lump, all the time, these days!

Just curious but what kind of "failures" did you have with lump?
