I finally finished my first UDS. The pulled pork it cranked out was amazing, I'm becoming the neighborhood BBQ Guru thanks to you guys. This has a Turkey therm mod, 3-3/4 intakes with one gate valve. Painted John Deere green. I used mostly parts that I found here and there. Total cost to build, about $10.

I have a quick question. I ma getting a reconditioned drum. This drum has been media blasted on the inside and rinsed. Will a burn out still be necessary to clean the inside or will I need it to to remove the paint from the outside?

I'd burn it just to be safe, besides nothing like a roaring fire to make you feel manly!

Leave air intakes shut down for another 5 minutes then open it back up to where you had it before and the temp spikes will be almost nonexistent.
Thats a great tip... Thanks!!!

Leave it if it doesn't peel, scuff it and paint. Unless you want the classy look.

Would the system used in this picture work well for your air intake? Is the reason you guys use ball valves because this system would leak too much air?

I was thinking of using a system like this or air vents from a weber kettle so that I don't have anything sticking out of the sides. I want my UDS to be highly mobile.

You sound like a good candidate for magnets over the holes.
What type of lid are you looking at using?

If you dont want anything sticking out from the sides, just drill your 4 3/4 inch holes and use flat strips of magnets to cover as much of the hole as you need covered. OR use plugs to plug the holes. BDS's work that way

http://www.bigdrumsmokers.com/smokers.htm

click on the mini1427 and youll see the hole at the bottom. He uses plugs to cover the holes.
