Invite to Big Lunch street party
8:40pm Thursday 25th June 2009
Neighbours are being encouraged to get to know each other better next month when a street party takes place.
The party takes place on Sunday, July 19, between 11am and 2pm in the car park area and back garden of 64 Exmouth Street.
Residents from Exmouth Street, Stanmore Street and Radnor Street in the town centre are invited to attend. It aims to enable neighbours to rediscover a community feeling and take time out to learn more about each other.
There will be a free barbecue cooked by Alvin Harris, the British Barbecue Champion.
The idea of the Big Lunch was dreamed up by Tim Smit and friends one morning at the Eden Project, in Cornwall, and events are taking place all over the country. Sarah Sharp, of Stonham, a housing association group, jointly organised this particular event with her colleague Rowena Smana. She said: “It is very important people get along with their neighbours which is why events like this are so important.
“Engaging with neighbours doesn’t seem to happen anymore.
“We go to work, get in our cars and don’t really know who lives next door.
“Even if people only turn up at the event for half an hour and show their face, it will be a big and great step forward.”
There will be a raffle at the event and prizes include free admission to Cotswold Wildlife Park, a free meal at La Carbonara, in Westcott Place, Ten Pin bowling tickets and vouchers for Butterfly World.
Mrs Sharp said: I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully, it will be a great day.
“I would like to say a big thank you to Alvin Harris for his contribution.”
For further information, or to get involved in the Big Lunch, contact either Sarah or Rowena on 01793 613677.
